Ive got an idea... How about the companies start charging the customers when a driver picks up a dirty trailer and then pass that money on to the driver for cleaning up someone else's mess. I know it wont happen but it sure might fix the problem. Back when I drove OTR the company I drove for would pull UPS loads into the UPS terminal in Chicago after you found ur empty trailer you would spend the next hour cleaning out all the crap that they have thrown back into the trailer ie shrink wrap, busted up pallets, and random peices of cardboard and once found a bag of trash from off the dock...not my crap so why should I volunteer my time to clean it up.
Why are Schneider trailers dirty?

A paper mill that we have D&H with has a guard shack at the entrance and the guard will inspect the trailer and if it needs cleaning out the guard will provide you a broom to sweep it out and a trash can to deposit the trash.
As for picking up an empty from a customer. You can bet your last dollar if they leave trash in the wagon I will open the doors and leave that trash right there in there yard or right in front of the dock doors -
I went to a distribution center yesterday and dropped a load, picked up my empty and inside, 4 broken pallets, staples in the floor, and a ton of garbage.
I swept it out, and threw all the trash in their dumpster. I don't mind sweeping trailers but I thought the pallets were a little much

If I pick up a trailer from a customer or just get finished with a live unload and they haven't swept it out?? Come on?? Why do we have put everything on the drivers. If takes three hours to take off eight pallets then you have time to sweep my trailer out. If not fine. I do not belive in taking what is not mine so I will leave it on your docks.

My last company had real bad trls inside and out complete filth and wore out.Surprised cust would even load their product on them. It's nice driving for a company with clean working equipment.I don't have to feel like I need another shower the first time I open the trl and lower and raise the landing gear.

My two cents (adjusted to $9.74 due to inflation):
1) On Dropped Trailers, Consignee should take the responsibility to ensure that the Trailer is "cleaned out" sufficiently for the next "Shipper". Simple economics tells us they are the ones that are receiving the product(s) that produce their PAYCHECKS
2) CARRIERS should be more aggressive in requesting that Consignee's leave their equipment prepared for the next Shipper - i.e. it might be them???? duh!!! This can easily be accomplished in a professional manner, and quite frankly, I sincerely believe that the Management at "most" Consignees would agree, if it was brought to their attention!
3) When I pick up an MT that is not "cleaned out", I sweep it out - not thrilled, not happy, but realistically, if that's the worst thing that happens to me that day, .... OH WELL
4) By NO MEANS, would I ever sweep out debris out of the Trailer onto someone's property - something about two wrongs ....
Again, just my humble comments. You'all be careful out there, and have fun!DrtyDiesel Thanks this. -
