That was then this is now. I think its fair to say diesel wasnt $4 or more a gallon for a whole lot of those 38 years.

Most newbies in training there champ and it rarely gets better afterward. Say you average 60 mph while making .30 cpm which is highly unlikely you will still only make $18 hourly. Do the math.

18.50 for students? No way. Not as company drivers anyway. I could see a contractor paying that, but any contractor that pays students that much is a moron IMO.

Conway has both otr(truck load) and local(ltl). He's talking about the ltl side. And most newbies either get very lucky with Conway to start out in ltl. Most of them have to work the docks and work their way up the chain to get into ltl.

I think this is more about truckload vs ltl. Yes, ltl has wild runs that makes one feel like a otr driver and scheduled runs that just run to the same spot and return home. They have local spots that do infact pay over $18 an hour to start. Again, this isn't much money but its a start and you can bid on a high paying road job in the future. It may take a week or 10 years. I run wild ltl because trucking is in my blood. It's different though. Going home is automatic on Fridays and all terminal to terminal drop and hook. Mileage pay is .55 and nothing is short changed. They route trips the best way not just the shortest. I haven't seen under 600 miles a day since I can remember. The hardest part of my job is carrying my luggage to the motel
