Fees, fees, and more fees. Truck, insurance, business permits, HUT, UCR, base plates, 2290 etc. And yes I read your post @ http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...becoming-owner-operator-steps-forms-info.html as well as some of the links that were available there about the different business entities and their pros and cons etc, and I guess this is the wrong place to get into all of that, so.... I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experience in here.

I am always glad to help. It isn't cheap to own and operate a class 8 truck. It seems like there is always someone with their hand out wanting money, mainly the government.

Yep, Al is great, unless your guy has pissed him off. Then, you don't get much. We go in, drop money in the box, cook for everyone, do laundry and Al's people hook us up. Only, if we are on site. Good luck calling in.

It sounds like things haven't changed much since I was there. Al wanted me to run out of his terminal at one time. Apparently, he lost some of his regulars. I did haul loads for him, but had a really hard time making myself pay the piper.

I just asked if they had any spots. We need to make a change and Al treats his driver's well. We love being at his place. "Paying the piper" is straight up, with Fontana.

Wisconsin/MN and ND drive me NUTS! I can't stand those places. Our last load up there; involved running 30 miles out, 30 miles back, load truck, too high - standard SD. Then we spent the night; to run around for another load, paying less. Everyone showed up to measure load. 2 days wasted and we were pissed!

First trip, they wanted us to take a load to VA coast, during a hurricane. I said, "are you crazy?" Then, I said no. Three days later, all the roads were flooded. We ran South and took a cash load, instead.

If "paying the piper" is too much with Al, what did you think of the Olander office? What about Copeland?

My father was an o/o and I learned old school, for 20 years. My husband has been driving for 25 years. We jumped in and did fine. NO DRIVING SCHOOL.

We are losing 5G a month, compared to 3 years ago. We expect to gross 15G a month. The safety rating cuts us out of loads. Our agent is trying to make money. We've watched drivers leave and come back. I've had drivers ask if 7K is acceptable. Not for us.

I've posted our settlement sheets, in the past. We know this business and crst-malone is not working for us. We have good business sense, so we might choose to go to a company that has more loads and a better safety rating, because we can.

we have a buddy who did a you-tube video for CRST-Malone. Can I do a video? Can I do my own, from a wife's viewpoint? Can I tell the truth? What if I post my own videos, about my daily life?

I don't think CRST-Malone would like it very much.

Just for fun, we're on stop dispatch, AGAIN! We haven't used our trailer in 2 months, but they reckon we need tires. So, we paid our agent 175 a week for trailer, didn't use ours, and now we CAN'T use ours, or get a load!

    FML, REALLY?!?

My husband gets popped for our agent's ###### trailer, in an inspection. We haven't hauled our trailer, for months, now we're on stop dispatch, AGAIN? Yep. we paid 175 to be put on stop dispatch.

Call these guys, if you have an issue, and you are an O/O.

Al does have nice facilities and those who run out of his office regularly seem to do well. You are right about everything being up front with him. He owns his own terminal and can run it any way he sees fit.

I would not usually run into an area where I knew that a hurricane or snow storm was hitting. I would rather sit and wait for something that I knew would work for me and I would not need to worry about the weather so much.

Olander sort of does his own thing, but in a different way than Al. He also has his regulars. I think he still owns 5 of his own trucks. Doug's wants his son to take over his office, but I am still not sure that he is really cut out for it. Perhaps he just needs more experience. I don't recall much about Copeland. I ran some good paying loads out of Olander's office.

I ran my trucks when I leased to them pretty much as I do with my own authority. I still used a dispatcher, but made my own decisions as to where I ran and the rate I wanted. I had a minimum haul rate and didn't go below that rate. That didn't go well with dispatch sometimes, but I always made money with them. I still think they are a decent company, judging from a few owner operators with whom I have spoken and have been with them for a number of years. Part of doing well with them is finding your niche. You should be able to get pipe our of OKC or Tulsa. They had good rates at one time. I believe that they still get skid loaders out of Wichita, too. Those are not too far from you if you still live in Oklahoma.
