A lot of places will load it so it can be secured. Most also load it so the trailer is heavy. I hate that. Makes a difference in the feel. If you have any questions about how to secure a load, ask the shipper how they want it secured. Some have special rules for their loads that others wont have.

I am 54 and considering flatbed very much just need to loose a little spare tire. did reefer not crazy about all the waiting and dealing with receivers. are you reqiured to climb on top of the tall loads to strap or tarp ? I have seen a tall load of pipe leaning while being transported what causes that ? thanks

yes/no some places allow you on the trailer to tarp (foam from VA entire length of trlr and as tall as a full sized truck you are allowed on top of load) while others they will put tarp on for you and you fin/use a tarping machine so it depends on the cust diff things can cause a pipe load to lean taking curves/turns to fast is the main one not enough straps will do it too

What DA1 said. Some places will not allow you on the trailer period, let alone the load. A lumber place up in Maine will tarp it for you. Just have to secure the tarp. If you take turns too fast and/or dont put enough securement on the load, it will shift. Also if you have all the straps pulling to one side, itll cause it to lean.

Last load. A 2 dropper of metal CP with some crates full of fittings. Once drop in Alexandria Va, and the other in Forrestville Md.

thanks da1 and ORD it would feel a little nerving walking on foam but I'm sure it's stronger than it looks. Are most of the flatbed loads pre-loaded before you get there ? does Prime have trailers sitting at shippers like they do in reefer ( drop & hook )? I remember going to McCains in Main there must have been 40 or more trailers sitting there. Do you pickup or unload during the night like reefer and does and does it slow down towards the weekend like tanker ? Thanks for taking the time to answer all these questions, trying to get as much info as i can to decide flatbed or back to reefer. Theres no better source than the driver

Flatheaders only do it during daylight hours... they're skeered of the dark! :biggrin_2559:

Straps only thrown from one side like ORD mentioned will do it. Loose straps.

Not using "belly straps" is a big one too. They run through the middle and help make the bottom half of the load more stable.
