First a small intro..I'm 51 been in either construction or trucking the last 12 years. Small company owner who went under..Easy to blame the economy but truth be told it was lack of forward planning on my part.. or aliens..Owned a diesel emissions company and could not keep up with the changes or process of enforcement in the great state of California..My feelings on CARB can be saved for another day. So getting off the fence and out of the office the time to jump in the cab and go OTR has come..No CDL and applications have been accepted by all the big companies who train and hire..Time to choose..

Now I understand hard work and dedication and the fact it's gonna be a long hard year.. Been reading the boards here and have got some good info and read some sad disgruntled posts..From owning a business with employees I truly understand some people are never going to be happy with what ever they are given.. I after reading some of the posts almost went to McDonanlds and applied while searching for a nice bridge to live under..Life is what we make of it and I plan on a year of complete dedication learning a new and intriguing business.. .If it works fantastic if not no complaints and move on..

Now if you made it through all that I'm not gonna name names of the companies I have to choose from but there are seven of them..each from what I see have strong points each have weak points..Help me out and let me know if you were starting fresh..who would you go with..I have five days to make a choice..thanks and I look forward to any response..

I looked at them myself, and you're the second person I've heard that from. But I'm still leaning towards Prime because their training pay is higher ($600/wk or $0.12/mi vs. $400/wk), and driver pay is also higher ($0.32/mi + $0.05/mi for lightweight truck vs. $0.27/0.29/0.33/0.36 sliding scale). I'd rather be paid more to train.

What makes Squire / Knight more attractive than Prime for starting out?

Knight transportation is 60 miles from the house over Prime. I live up around Minneapolis MN area.

Knights close..but that really doesn't matter..my goal is a up-front company and a chance to work hard and learn the business through the first year..Willing to go all in..make the best of it. .who supports their drivers better...not only pay but help with the entire business aspect of trucking. .

The guy I talked to on the road last week had nothing bad to say about Knight.

Location to me means it's easier for them to get me home.

Hard to beat it when the shop is 17 miles from the house vs 170.

Where you live plays into it, as far as getting home. You live in Barstow, however, you'd be passing thru a lot, but not necessarily have time to stay.
