No matter how you pay, if the receipt has a time stamp on it you have a potential problem..
Fueling last thing before parking gets you a shower and allows for a legal break.
The reset goes fast, basically a nights sleep and a day off. -

Is it more common to have to take a 34 reset or is it "easy" to just keep trucking without hitting 70? I don't understand why a 7 hour "nap" would still be considered duty time once the 14 starts. Really how many truckers spend that 8 hours in the berth...?

Mr. Mom I can answer your question. It depends on the driver. I have at times slept a full 8 hours in the sleeper berth. Usually this happens the day before I deliver. I try to arrive at the town where I deliver as early as I can to get a full nights sleep. Usually I can get by on 6-7 hours of sleep,but sleeping in once in a while is nice.

you can split the time. It's kind of tricky, but here goes. One of the periods of time must be at least 2 hours long and can be either off-duty or sleeper birth, or a combination of the two. The second period of time must be 8 consecutive hours in the sleeper birth, but less than 10 (obviously, if you took 10 or more you'd get your restart right there)
The tricky part of this rule is you don't get your restart at the end of the second period of time, you get it at the end of the FIRST period of time. So lets say I'm at a customer and after 15 minutes there I go off-duty for 2 hours. (yah, big no-no, whatever) Then I drive to a truckstop 2 hours away and log into sleeper birth for 8 hours. I will then have 9 hours of drive time and 12 hours of 14 hr clock to run ! the reason being it resets my clock to the end of the 2 hours I was off-duty at the customer, it counts the 2 hours of driving against me, and it ignores the 8 hours I spent in the sleeper.
Are you with me ? good, then let's see if this part confuses you. So now after our 8 hours in the sleeper we have 9 hours of driving and 12 hours of the 14 hour clock to use. First we do a 15 minute pre-trip and fuel, and we head out and drive 4 hours, take a 15 minute break and drive 4 more hours. Now we stop and spend 2 hours off duty. How much time do we have to run ?
Well, we had 9 hours driving and used 8. so by that rule we WOULD have 1 hour driving left.
We had 12 hours of the 14 hour clock and used 10 - 1/2 so we WOULD have 1 - 1/2 there.
But since we did 8 hours in the sleeper before starting and now we took 2 hours off duty we get to move our reset to the end of the 8 hour period. remember when splitting 8/2 your reset is always at the end of the first period taken, not the second ! So at the end of the 8 hour sleeper period we had 11 driving and used 8, so we have 3 left on that rule. We had 14 hours total and we used 15 minutes + 4 hours + 15 minutes + 4 hours + 2 hours = 10 1/2. so we have 3 -1/2 hours there !!
I mostly find the 8/2 split handy when using e-logs where I can log off-duty or sleeper for 2 hours or more at shippers/recievers. Frankly, I would always log 15 minutes to load or unload and go directly to off-duty. If I would get 2 hours off duty, that would mean I only had to take 8 hours in sleeper birth later and I could get a partial restart rather than having to take a whole 10 hours.
