I'm looking to purchase this truck from my employer.
It's a 1997 Peterbilt 377, 3406E, 9 speed, 3.55 gears, 1.1 M miles. The truck has all new brake linings, the virgin tires are in excellent condition but are 6 years old, 6 aluminum wheels, new paint several years ago, interior is dusty but cleanable. The truck needs door weatherstripping, trailer air lines and pigtail, mudflaps, and probably other small things. There is no rust, hood and cab have no damage. The fifth wheel assembly is new.
Boss said he would make sure the A/C works and that he doesn't think the engine had ever been worked on. Looks like half of the value of the truck is in wheels and tires
He implied that he'd be willing to finance the truck. I still need to add batteries sometime after work and fire it up. Our lead mechanic said the truck always started right up no matter how cold it was outside.
What say you?

Offer them no more than $4,500. At least at that price, if the engine blows, you can get the $ back in scrap weight.

walk away.

What are you planning on doing with it ? leasing back on with your current employer ?

it is cheaper than a car or pickup truck. You can put a little money in it and go out a make a hundred thousand dollars with it in a year pretty easy. even if you have to overhaul it it would still be cheaper than any lease purchase you could find. I have two 1994 tractors have had the one for 10 years and the other for a year they are both good tractors. Of course those reading this will say I am crazy.
Team7 and scottied67 Thank this. -
california makes the rules first. everyone else eventually follows suit.
since cali is trying to push out old trucks. soon, the rest of the country won't want them on the road either.
as much as none of us want a newer truck. it won't be long before we're forced to give up our old trucks. -
if you want a real inexpensive truck, fine, but if you want it just cause it's a pete, don't do it.

This truck probably has $4500 in wheels and tires. -
Buy it if it is something YOU want and you can make it work for YOU. Older trucks can always be fixed repaired and rebuilt. I wouldn't put to much value on tires that are 6 years old though if that is your main consideration, to me they look like they have been sitting and the drives, one looks fairly new the others about 50-60%. I just bought a truck that is 3 years older than my current truck because it is what I have been wanting for a long time besides other reasons.
