Some of these places are just plain wacko with safety rules. I'm not even going to start with DOW. Abandon all hope ye who enter here.
Hey Ironpony, DO they provide adequate training on how to put on snow chains? Are company drivers forced to drive in bad snow conditions? Thak you for the info.
Sure they do. I've heard some trainers get the chains out in July and have the trainees practice... you may sweat, but it beats doing it the first time in 10-below. There's an online-video in the company's private website, and you can search YouTube for "chaining up a semi" or something like that as well. There's also the tire on a stand in Driver's Lineup in Springfield... if ya feel like it you can chain that one while you're there. Ain't no big thang really... Prime has a "Captain of the Ship" policy... you are the captain of your ship. If you decide that conditions are beyond your capabilities or are dangerous, you let dispatch know and shut it down. OTOH, the Surface Transportation Assistance Act of 1986 (I think that's the right year) is a federal law that bars trucking companies from coercing you to drive in unsafe conditions, and provides for civil penalties if they do. I've only shut it down a couple of times over the years, but have never received any grief over it. My FMs have always expressed concern that I should stop before things get bad, be safe, and have even tried to dissuade me from driving - in conditions that I considered "good enough" to continue. But then again, I come from Colorado, and you'd starve at home if you didn't drive in conditions that scare the bajeezus out of most flatlanders.
Ive been there... Got to have their little card lol Have a whole collection of those certifications from different places.
I just want to thank you Ironpony, Openroaddreamer, verynew2trucking and Dragontamerbrat for providing me with information on Prime. You have all been a tremendous help to me in making my final decision. I will be moving to Denver, Co probably in JUly and applying for Prime. I hope to meet all of you, once I finish my training. Furthermore, do any of you drivers know and recommend any trainers for me, maybe out of the Denver area? You all be safe out there! Lets stay in touch.
