Looks like 30-32MHz is being used for paging / commercial 2 way services.

We had just started to touch communications when I stopped going and decided to drive instead. Never said I was a graduate. I do have a slight understanding of electronics, but when it comes to communications I am still a bit lost.

Thanks for all the input from everyone. I greatly appreciate it.

Don't let CJ bother you, it's obvious that he knows very little about what he's commenting on.

In Houston I detect 2 open transmitters. Birdies? One is on 30.300 and the other 31.300.

No worries here wind. When it comes to the theory behind it I get lost, but give me a schematic and the parts needed and I can either repair it, upgrade it, or build it.

    windsmith Thanks this.

    Thats a fact!

While he does bring up some good facts such as antenna/coax being the most beneficial, his power chart well....not so much. Even the difference between 4 watts and 20 watts can be the difference in being heard or not being heard.

I'm willing to bet that you're picking up interference from nearby electronic devices. They may still be there if you disconnect your antenna. If so, then it could be your computer, phone, television, pretty much anything close by that has an oscillator.

Thanks, I do know that small increases in power will not make much of a difference, but when you start turning it up, as long as your antenna is the correct size it will make a difference of being heard and not heard. I am not looking for a 10 meter unit, just something that will give me a little bit of reach when I need it. It sucks when stuck on side of the road someplace with no one around and you cannot reach out to someone for assistance.

    I concur.

When the skip is strong I hear military training in this range, pretty fun to monitor. In my county and surrounding counties, Emergency Management (Civil Defense) uses frequencies in the 45-46 MHz rang.
