I'm sorry but I just don't understand how one can make it on 1.50 a mile being an O/O. I'm not an O/O myself, although I dream about it from time to time, but I'm still intelligent enough to understand operating costs. I just don't understand it.

I was working in my family trucking and after years of that I went and had my own truck, that burned bridges. I went and sold the truck and trailers to go driving for a company, I made far less but kept my family life together.
Now I am looking at getting a older tractor and newer trailer since I built up a good reputation with a few brokers over the years and was getting very good rates for my company hauls. I made over 15k a month for the loads to the company truck, problem is the owner resigned on our agreement. So I told him to shove it and now his unit is setting still not making any money, the brokers will not pass anything on to him.
Keeping out of payments for the tractor is the key, just have to keep on top of it and not let things hit you all at once. -
Heck, I even got a great rate to move 100,000 bushels of corn. And that NEVER happens. But this makes me smile because of all those hopper only guys just blow steam out their ears when we part-time hopper pullers come in and "steal" loads.SHC Thanks this. -
They actually have multiple boards for approved carriers with certain boards being invitation only for both carriers and agents.
And then there are are agents that try and work with just BCOs, ones that just want to move the load and ones that would rather work with outside carriers.
My suggestion to anyone that starts hauling for LS is to keep track of what agency you are hauling for. You need to think of each of them as separate brokers. Get to learn what they do, how they work and if they will look to work with an outside carrier before a BCO.
If you get in good with an agent that doesn't care you can do pretty well as everyone does better in the system with outside carriers. Even know a couple ex-BCOs that went independent and are now doing the same dedicated lane they did as a BCO but at much better rate. -
