Woke up this mornin thinkin bout all of this and realized that an iPad would be a waste for me.
Reason being, my truck gets dusty/dirty from the places I have to take my loads to.
I come home every day looking like I still work in construction lol.
Yeah, I don't think MY environment would be good for it!

I really dont think an Ipad is a bad choice, because you can get google earth and view your route that way and see where you are going zoom in zoom out you know where to turn in and where you can turn around and have an exit plan. My Iphone does that so i dont consider it too much but i use mine all the time unless it is somewhere i have been before.

I use my GPS along with directions wrote on the top of my windshield in dry erase marker. I also write down my qualcomm order numbers and pickup numbers on the left side of my windshield as well. Back when I was OTR, instead of putting my order numbers on the left side of windshield I would put truck stop exit/locations where I planned to stop at for the day (usually had 1 stop planned with 1-2 backups depending on traffic and parking situations).-MadMax- said: ↑wow!
Who thunk that one up? Genius!
I'll give it a try. Or... now that you mention "dry erase" maybe if this doesn't work a dry erase board (secured in some fashion) would be a viable alternative to paper.Click to expand...
Looking at your sig, it seems you do dry bulk. Not sure how you get that dirty... I hardly get dirty lol. Sometimes if I'm unloading in a muddy area I will get some mud of my pant legs, but not to much. Sometimes places do get dusty but not to bad-MadMax- said: ↑Woke up this mornin thinkin bout all of this and realized that an iPad would be a waste for me.

I used a dry erase board (about 12"x12") and it worked perfectly.Green Machine said: ↑I use my GPS along with directions wrote on the top of my windshield in dry erase marker. Yeah, it gets pretty dusty... the plants, getting out to open/close hatches. Hoses, wind blowing sand/cement around... trucks just seem dusty/grimy. Drove a new truck today and my hands were gritty/black from the steering wheel. Dunno if it's another driver, mechanics, or the steering wheel disintegrating.
It's not really "dirt" or mud, more like sand and cement. Had my boots muddy one time and my trainer was like "before you get in my truck you better kick your boots off" - I laughed and said not a problem. I'm anal like that as well.
cheers -
I use a "head light" (its a flashlight with a strap to put on your head) and use the red light in the cab to read maps so you dont have that ajustment to the light and dark and the flashlight part works good when pretrip your truck in the dark-MadMax- said: ↑My company gives me printed directions every morning. BUT they are in like a 5 font, meaning, I cannot read them at 0600 while going down the highway still dark out with my cab light on then trying to adjust to the dark again.Click to expand...

I use Ms streets to design my routes including fuel stops and all multi stops, then I take a minute to follow the route and make any changes needed like avoiding tolls and anything else I might need to avoid on certain runs, once that is done I simply save it to a SD card and plug it into my nuvi 465 this has not let me down yet and if I happen to have a student with me they don't miss fuel stops or break stops since I can also ad those in aswell so trainee knows where I.want to stop for dinners or whatever, it really works good.
Also my laptops are not used by anyone for any reason, one is dedicated to work meaning maps e -logs and other company paperwork I scanned in to make filling things out faster and easier note : I still make newbies fill out there paper logs even though it gets recorded onto my laptop aswell and they also make there own routes on the old map book just so they know how, but they follow my nuvi to each location even if I'm not really sleeping but trying to. LOL
So for me its Ms streets and nuvi 465.
On a side note I don't like the 7 inch screens those units are to big IMO the nuvi slips right in my laptops case and has never been lost or broken. -
I am using a garmin app on the iPhone right now. I do not think I need to spend 150 for another app. But an iPad would be nice
