Just got my CDL A! But all companies in the area require 12+months experience.

    Patty,

I learned the wrong way back in the 70's no school either and to be honest you had no truck drivers school back then, no such thing as a CDL but just a chauffeur license after you were 18.

I learned on coal trucks and asking to learn.

So, please tell me where us wrong way drivers like the OP did wrong.

Op should look into getting a local cdl b job and work into an A postion, I have almost 9 years in a straight truck and just landed my first real trucking job with a small local company who is willing to train me. I also got my cdl the wrong way.

Not just pepsi or coke. Here are some ideas:

Seven up/Snapple distributor, Budweiser distributor, Coors distributor, produce companies that have straight trucks doing local routes (Goya, Produce Distribution Center, Dandee foods in my area), school bus companies or if your city hasn't contracted school bussing to private companies, your city or county school bussing, garbage and recycling pickup (these are both govt jobs - actual decent benefits), or waste mgmt, advanced disposal garbage truck driving, driving a cement mixer (straight truck), log trucking (even Utah has to have some trees, right?), lazer spot or spotting (driving a yard dog truck) at any number of companies, heavy hauler towing (local and great training leading to an excellent skillset). That's just what I came up with off the top of my head in a couple minutes.

Foodservice distribution companies, us foods, mbm, sysco and such. Medical supplies companies like PTT World Medical...

Good for you. You don't have to go over the road. Start asking around and drive around in traffic and start writing down names of trucking companies that have daycabs and straight trucks that you see. Then start pounding the pavement. Never hurts to ask and never hurts to put in apps.

Good luck. I think you have chosen the right path.

This site is absolutely the best for newbies and like me wannabe,s. i still have a couple of weeks left in school and thank all of you for saying to pay for school on my own and not become a slave to companies that just abuse new drivers and sour their whole experience of learning a new profession. unfortunately for me my 2 speeding tickets and a dui 6 years ago are really hindering the pre-hire letters i was hoping for though i have received 2 . the 2 i did receive were from the most undesirables according to this site.Any suggestions? what is a BFI?
