Dstar DOES work but it cost way too much money ........
This is why at the jail we stayed with analog ....
You buy a good FM radio and a good 150 watt amp put up a good antenna and your set ....... -

D-Star range is very limited about 25 miles or less. With a range of about 25 mile into a repeater and about 275 repeaters nationwide that's not alot of coverage. Even if you place 6 repeaters per State. And if you notice that only Icom uses it. Yaesu and Kenwood are going with APCO P-25 radios. I would wait before buying any D-Star radio. You may be glad that you did.

ICOM makes a digital ( P25 ) radio which is what I was talking about ....
Strangly it will do much of what the HAM dstar does but at over $800 per radio and we arte paying $140 for our new analog ones it was not worth the price ...
I don't know if P-25 is a REQUIREMENT but your right it IS the standard ...
UPDATE ..... according to our #1 tech ...
Dstar would be LEGAL for use here if the radio is part 90 ....Last edited: Apr 11, 2012
