Of course I would rather go 13 mph slower than you and only drive around 89,000 miles to make the same profit you do driving 140,000 miles that is around 51,000 more miles by you to make the same profit in a year. It appears I will be at home alot more unless I want to make more profit than you do.
Could even roll those profit gains back into truck with investments to gain even more of a fuel mileage spread....wait I have already done that and I don't think I will show the numbers between a 70 mph truck @ 5.7 mpg and a 57 mph truck @ 9.15 mpg. The fuel savings alone is $38,433 in one years time.....WOW! That is the cost of one nice Harley or two....
Maybe somewhere in the middle works for you, but I want to drive less, be at home more and make more per mile. -
If I was the O/O I would think of driving slower making up the time, but as a driver. I need to make my money by Time spent driving per mile.

the we agree to disagree Dice1.
I hope you enjoy your time on the road because you will have to drive a LOT longer than me to get the same revenue. -
You probably make more than you company does off your truck due to this wasteful practice that is also a poor business plan by your company owner.
You should always be prepared to find another company that will let you do the samething with the more miles more attitude and ungoverned trucks.
Company Drivers with no fuel saving incentive should go as fast as they can covering every mile they can legally log. -
I have done it your way for years and I can tell you going slower not only makes more money, but you drive fewer miles to make that money too. Have you done it my way before because you have not ever mentioned it if you have that leads me to believe you have never tried it to see if it works for you too? -
Or a Company worth their salt would share more of that profit with the driver to give in incentive to drive slower. Our incentive is only $50 per quarter. even driving like I do, I still made the 50 bucks 3 our of the 4 quarters, I am number 2 on the seniority with our company because they can't keep drivers that can't make money. If you want to keep your drivers, you have to meet him half way. Most companies do not want to do that and then cry like babies that they have such a high turn over rate! I'll go slower if you share your profit with me to keep me working for you. or you can let me drive in a truck that will do 72 mph and let me drive as many legal miles as I can drive. it is the companies choice, for me. it is the money period!

I believe a company driver would take better care of a truck with a fuel mileage bonus system. That driver wants that truck running right to get that bonus and they will idle alot less too. That is why I used MVT's fuel bonus program as an example of a fleet where it works and over 50% of the fleet is over 9 mpg earning those bonuses. -
If Company owners would sit down with the drivers and work out something, retention would be much better. I ran a company in the past. I know how hard it can be to turn a profit. But working with the employee at making the profit, profits both the owner and the driver. I know what I have to make per year in a certain amount of time. That is what I am bringing to the table. I tend to work longer than most people, but I still need a certain amount of time off each week. Right now I make what I need in the Time that I need to make it. I am not asking to reduce my time to make more money or to increase my time. So in order for me to agree to meet the demands of driving slower, the owner needs to make up the pay. So... He will make a profit by slower speed, but he is still paying the driver his 70 Gs per year. The driver is still giving him the same amount of time for that 70 Gs to.

I also have a APU. so the Idle time is near 0% here.
