What I always laugh about is the sheer amount of money these engine mfg's spend on R&D, and how much of a market advantage they would have if they could constantly spank their competition in the race for fuel efficiency .....but somehow they all totally overlook a piece of pipe in the fuel line.

These companies aren't stupid. They all know how to improve fuel economy they're just at the mercy of emissions regulations, weight concerns, price ect. You don't need a lab test or a dyno to see what happens when you take an older engine into a shop and they flash the ECM with a newer low NoX file. The performance and fuel economy goes in the toilet.

My dad took the W900L he was driving at the time with a 550 6NZ pulling a flat and got 7mpg. Usually it would do 6-6.5 but just as an experiment he drove as of he was being tested and guess what, the mileage increased. Any gains people may see with these are because they were motivated to save fuel.

    Google "placebo effect."!

Funny part is that these engine manufactures could easily reach 10mpg.....but the oil companies have someone in their pocket to make sure they don't until it is mandated.

I don't either, there is no grand conspiracy. It's proven if you take a newer engine and strip off all the emissions junk you can gain 1-2mpg. All the companies know this they're just not allowed to do it.

I guess according to some in this thread all you really need to do is install a voodoo fuel pipe! Lol

I don't believe that either because the first truck manufacturer to make a 10 mpg truck will get all the business and that is what it is all about. Cat would still be making truck engines if it was not for the EPA.

Exactly my point, I've seen trucks in Germany with ratings in the 11's for MPG (that's US gallons too, not EU)

So if the PACCAR DAF engine can get 10+mpg over there, why can't it here???
