A gallon of diesel has ~139,000 BTUs, so at 60 mph would be 13,900 BTU/Min= 327HP. Now that is at 100% efficiency, even the most efficient (and largest) diesels are only around 50% efficient, a truck motor might hit 40% in it's sweet spot. That leaves ~130HP to propel the truck down the road. For an idea how little power that is, Dice getting 9mpg @ 60mph would be 146HP. Hopefully that will let you understand that further gains aren't going to come easily barring an unexpected advance in engine technology.

Also remember that the energy content of diesel varies significantly, depending on the refinery it comes from. Diesel can range from 6.6 to 7.3 lbs/gal, with the energy content more or less proportional to the weight. When I hauled fuel 15 years ago in Amarillo, Phillips fuel was 7.1+ and clear as JetA. Diamond Shamrock's product was just below 6.8 and distinctly greenish in color. And yes, the PH66 fuel would give you a significant MPG boost over the DS sewer water.

    SHC and Dice1 Thank this.

In Europe they are governed around 54 mph and have a minimum 52 Cetane fuel. I would love to have some 52 Cetane fuel to get over 10 mpg with my truck.

    SHC Thanks this.

What would be the difference in our 40 Cetane Diesel and what the Europeans run with 52 Cetane Diesel?

Peterbilt developed a truck similar to a freight train engine. It had a diesel engine that charged the electric motors that drove the wheels. It's torque was 10x that of a std diesel engine and it burned 1 gallon per 33 miles traveled. This was done in 1977 and since then the truck had been purchased by an "outside" company.....

I understand that fuel is much different in EU. It just makes no sense that the govt wants to regulate us and the engine manufactures, but yet the oil companies run basic sludge and call it fuel. And this bio-diesel crap really needs to stop. I can't even find ULSD anymore, everything is B10 blend junk now.

You guys can probably answer this for me too, can you still purchase LSD anymore??? If I decide to go local, I was thinking about having an above ground tank installed at my shop and having the local fuel company deliver LSD if I could get it. Not sure if it would be cost effective or not....maybe I can just find a local fuel stop that still sells it??

Cetane isn't a measure of energy content, Dice. Higher cetane numbers means the fuel burns faster, it's basically a indicator of ignition delay after injection.

Depends on the refinery, SHC. Phillips was 100% LSD out of Borger, just dyed red for off-road; while DS still ran a separate batch for HSD. I imagine the same scenario played out when ULSD came around.

When I worked for Risinger just a year ago I used to get it at Road Ranger in Lake Station all the time. I don't know if they still have it though.
