Maybe for some companies but the bigger companies pay slave wages.Yes there are lazy drivers but not all and many still make very little.Tell this guy where you're working so maybe he can apply there.

i work for Central Transport (local LTL) and without exp they wont hire him. My Last employer Lone Star Transportation (OTR Heavy Haul) had i not left i would have made $70,000 - $75,000 for 2012.....

Watkins Shepard new drivers fresh out of school will make $40,000 - $50,000 easy

And why would anyone with a brain go to work for a BIG Company like you said?

Hint: the answer is in my last reply to you :biggrin_25525:

ppl without OTR exp their choices of companies are limited so they choose a big outfit.I've heard of Watkins Shepard but hey if it pays good then more power to the drivers.Heavy haul takes a certain person, not everyone can do that. But hauling general freight for the most part don't pay much due to our sinken economy and low freight rates. Many drivers were forced to take a pay cut.I did,a 3 cent cut with my last company.Glad you're doing well with your LTL company but not everyone is that fortunate to drive for a good company. It's not from lack of trying but the company was'nt interested. This guy may very well do just fine as an OTR driver. But if he chooses a mega company i'm not going to hold my breath.

Ya you can make really good money otr no doubt about it, with a little effort you can have a reasonable lifestyle to.

The thing is if you have to ask what company to work for you don't know enough to get a good job. I guess what I'm saying is that good otr jobs don't just land in your lap, you need to know your area.

If you don't hear much about them then it's probably a good company. Folks tend to have more bad to say then good.

In the meantime I would take the local job and keep your ears on.

My advice: Don't focus on what you'll make to start, focus on what you'll make over your entire tenure at the job. To estimate that, you need to look several things including the promotion potential at each job. The promotion potential for OTR drivers is essentially zero.promotion potential for state/local gov jobs will vary from place to place but is generally better than you'll find going OTR. In the best cases, if you're well liked you will be able to hire into better positions as they come available even you are completely unqualified and receive paid on the job training. When does that happen in OTR? Never.

Take the govt. job - drop down the ethics, you will advance quick, get more money and more benefits. Retire in 20 yrs with a nice retirement fund and you can go OTR then, if you still want or at that time after "all that govt." experience, a private sector job will show up with nice pay.

I wish I could find something like that, did six yrs in the army so it should be easier but I just love traveling and seeing the country so that's what I'm doing now but if I had a chance at a job like that I would take it no questions asked, wouldn't even look at the pay.

    Good luck.

im telling you right now government is not always the best option.I currently work for the department of defense/Department of the Army.I am leaving due to tremendous politics and good old boy club type of work place. After 7 years i just cant handle it anymore. Working for the government is the biggest set of double standards. They do whatever they feel whenever they feel and there is nothing you can do about it.We have a union but still it is illegal for us to protest because we work for uncle Sam. BELIEVE ME, grass isnt always greener on the other side
