With the trucker 5000 mounted on the roof of the cab would I benefit more with a shorter shaft or longer shaft or does it matter ?

I am talking about the shaft between the mount and the center load part of the antenna

Anything less than 3 foot antenna is a waste.
The wave will start skipping the length of the antenna. That is the reason why a 102 length is the best. It is called a full length antenna.
Shorter ones use a resistor inside the mount to simulte a 102 length.

The thicker 5/8 ones "fool" the lengt by rapping it around the 5/8 pole.
This is why they can recive and transmit out further. "The more the antenna" the better the distance and recive.

    A 102" antenna is a [/b]1/4 wavelength[/b].

Antenna shorter than 1/4 wavelength use loading coils not resistors.

a TRUE 5/8 wavelength (about 22 feet) antenna requires a matching tap to get a 50 ohm load.

I was just wondering if i would get a little more distance if the load part of the antenna was closer to the roof or futher from the roof, or is the load part just to get the antenna to 102"

Ok, the longer the lower shaft, the shorter the upper whip will be which means less flex in the wind. Or less flex when encountering a tree branch etc.

Since the loading coil is already above the roof line etc, I don't really see any added benefit to going with the longer shaft.

I have been thinking about mounting my antenna this way, right in the middle of the cab and also was wondering if this would be better then the duals everybody seems to run even though I think they do it mostly for the looks. I was leaning towards a Wilson 2000 but would a 5000 get you out more or hear better or is it just needed if you are really running a ton of watts? I only got a older Galaxy 33HML and a Comet 200 so I'm thinking I'm only around 150watts or so.

The way i understand the difference between the 2000 and 5000 is how many watts they can handle.. with only 150 watts the 2000 should be fine for you...

    AS A RULE .......

The longer a antenna the better it works regardless of how many watts it's rated at.

My stock galaxy 979 with my wilson trucker 5000 mounted on the roof of my cab gets about 10 miles. Today sitting in my driveway in between houses I was talking to a guy that was 8 miles away also in a congested area he said I sounded like i was rite up the road. Im every happy with my setup. Can't wait to get some work done to it.
