I bought a refurbished RM 500 for $140 from the RM website. I've had it a month...no complaints.

I just wanted a guide, not something that would brush my teeth, comb my hair, and spoon-feed me my oatmeal. Just a guide with a few handy features.

But I will say...I very nearly went all-out and bought the 710.

I tried six different ones, 5" and 7"... Ended up with the rand 510. Happy last four months now. Lots of support and updates on forums.

A map is the best thing, don't put all ur trust in any GPS. I've known too many drivers that even with a truckers GPS got into very sticky situations. One wound up down a road that turned into a subdivision and ripped a cable out of a house, another ended up in a national park...always check ur map first.

Tried it, just thought it was a bit too big.

Another thing, yes maps are always good to use but if you update your gps week or two - there should be a reason you would drive thru a residential neighborhood. Unless you have your height/weight set incorrect. Also updating keeps you on top of all the new construction zones.

This can certainly be true if one uses the GPS as the do-all, end-all, know-it-all device that it is NOT intended to be.

There probably needs to be an additional disclaimer on these units:

"Using this unit will not eliminate the need of common sense of the user."

That's what he thought too, the road went to where he was heading...but that's not the way trucks go in. Here in GA where I live they did a news report about truckers using GPS and how it has contributed to the increase of trucks getting stuck on railroad tracks. We had 2 get hit by trains in 2 months. They don't always update rural areas.
