I assure you the 980 will have the same display color options as the 880.

    Some of the features:

    7 colors

    Brightness and contrast 0-15

    day/night option

    swr calibrate, swr

anl and nb, one, the other or both

    memory channels and scan

diagnostic of voltage supply, power output, and swr

volume, squelch, rf gain is a local/distant

    4 settings for mic gain

15 settings for talkback or off

    AM/USB/LSB

    Fine and coarse clarifier

    PA, priority ch9/19

    Noise cancelling mic

    Weather bands

Some key features that make this radio stand out:

The provided mic is INDEED noise cancelling. Not only that it is a clear and concise mic.

With proper tune this radio has modulation to spare.
On the 980 in contrast to the 880, the AM audio is very good but not quite the same fidelity with the factory mic whereas the 880 and it's own mic are phenominal. IMO an Astatic 636, Road Devil, RF Limited CR577 are better sounding and more precise on the 980. The Extreme 2018 echo mic DID NOT sound that well on the 880, but does sound well with this 980. I'm also EXTREMELY picky.

The receiver is EXCELLENT. Again, different from the 880 in that the sound fidelity is not quite the same, but similar to most radios.... BUT the receiver itself is much quieter than the 880, and the 880 is pretty darn good. I think most avid SSBers will really like the receive on this radio.

Weather reception is good, again the fidelity and volume of weather is less than that of the 880.

It's possible to tune this radio and match it to the amp of your choice. Variable power can also be added.

On this radio there is an adjustment for AM carrier as well as for AM modulation. Also adjustment for SSB limit and TX frequency.
Out of the box you can expect typical legal limit or a little less.

After basic tuning set at 2w carrier roughly AM side would peak about 14 and average about 4w, ssb power about 16-18. I worked a while to come up with a mod to get it to swing a little more yet maintain audio clarity on AM and SSB. The result was 2w carrier, 16w peak AM with a avg about 6w, SSB power up a bit maybe 18. These numbers are very typical of older grant power output.

There is a new final used in this radio. I suspect it to be a bipolar as it did not really respond to more voltage. There's adjustments as well for AM/SSB squelch, AM/SSB rx meter, tx meter, tx frequency, and several alignment pots not found on the 880. Not really sure it will be necessary for much alignment, two I did today were right on.

For the SSBers, the frequency stability was rock solid so that should be a plus.
The size of the 980 is equal to the 880, same width and height of a 29 but much shorter in depth.

    Mad Dog 20/20 Thanks this.
