walk around with your key sticking out between your fingers. When you make a fist, it makes a very effective self-defense item.

Against who, someone unarmed? Maybe, if there is no surprise to the attack. You're far better off carrying a knife with a beltclip (plus all the other uses you'll use it for) than think you're protecting yourself with a key.

being a permit to carry instructor as well as a personal defense, the last thing I tell people to carry for self-defense is a gun. It's only one of many tools in the bag for self-defense.

If you aren't ready to use any of the others before a gun, you don't need to be carrying a gun.

If I have to explain that, you shouldn't be looking to carrying a gun.

What good is a knife in your pocket on a belt clip when you have a key with a jagged edge capable of opening someone up just as well but with more pain.

Can you safely walk from the truck stop to your truck with a knife out and in your hand compared to a key?

    40cal,

I have heard all the arguments.

I am GOOD. I have fired over 15 different LEO qualification courses to include the original US Air Marshall course and PASSED them.

At my BEST, I have never been able to draw on someone closer than 26 feet from me. NEVER. Most who I have ever trained are lucky if they can cover someone from 50 feet away.

And that doesn't say ANYTHING about actually hitting a moving target.

how many other things need to be considered or completed BEFORE a gun is even considered?

You come across as if you don't have a gun, you aren't protected.

There are so many things you can do to protect yourself and you don't even need a gun.

This thread is a perfect example of who should and shouldn't be allowed to carry.

The ones that are most determined to carry seem to also be the most unstable.

ok, there was one post I wish would have remained...

    When it comes to self-defense.

    Levels of Awareness.
You don't know what you don't know
    You know you don't know
You learn what you don't know
You practice what you don't know
You DO what you didn't know.

    Levels of alertness.
white - You are oblivious to what's going on.
Yellow - you pay attention to what's going on.
Orange - Something has you concerned.
Red- Something ain't right in denmark. Do something.
Black - you are over-stressed and are oblivious to what's happening around you. (think Rodney King and the cops who were sitting in their car during the riots.)

This is like the umpteenth time I've read a thread like this and each time, I come away shaking my head thinking "what a bunch of wussies".

I used to deliver pizza in the ghettos between the hours of dark to 1am when I was 18-20ish. I not only was a walking dollar sign, but I also had pizza and a v.agina. I'm not going to let any truck stop scare me. I'll use common sense and the bungees on the air horn though, but I definitely think a gun is overkill.
