The happy drivers I know are lucky to be with companies THEY are satisfied with, or they are union drivers, or they are O/OP's. I have a buddy who's driven for almost 40 years, is an O/OP and runs under Landstar, 4 days a week dedicated Phx. to ATL and back with a few side drops. He's home Fri thru Sun. His take home is approx. $100,000/yr. I know a driver on here from Crete who makes $60-70/yr. There were 2 local driving jobs req. 1-3 years experience... driving tankers... starting pay was $65,000/yr. Home every night (well, early morning).

My point... you can make very good money after a year or two OTR. If you are smart. If you job hop from Covanent to Swift to Werner to... then you're NOT one of the smart drivers I refer to.

That said... and I have posted this elsewhere... the trucking business as a whole, when talking about the big, corporate driving mills... is as corrupt as the Federal govt. because they are in bed with the Federal govt. Swift receives Fed. grant money for graduating drivers and putting them in seats. They also receive $4000/per student for their "school". And you sign a 2+ year contract to "work off" the $4000 school costs. It's a scam on a nationwide basis.

That said, some bigger companies are now separating themselves from these others... like Knight Transport... they have raised their pay rates, have NO contracts and seem to be doing quite well. That is who I happen to be leaning toward to get back into driving again... as I am in Phx. and the pickings are slim.

That's my story (opinion) and I'm sticker to it... :biggrin_25523:

I too just read through all the posts to this point. Super good comment here! My husband and I team with Schneider. We were checking this forum to try and evaluate changing companies but overall Schneider is about as good as any other. Have heard Conway might be better but still need more research/feedback there. Smaggs, trust me, the grass is NOT greener on the other side. We went from a fantastic dedicated route with Schneider for 4 & 1/2 years to a crap route due to change in management. Their stupidity forced us to chose to leave and go OVR. Been doing that for 6 months and have hit just about every brick wall you have. It all boils down to "people" at the other end. There are some fantastic souls out there who get it and some real morons who need a swift kick in the derierre. The bottom line as i see it is. . .water the grass on your side to get it greener. Stand up for what you KNOW is right, take with a grain of salt that which irritates you but can't be changed and this is my MUST. . Write letters of kudos for those folks who do it right! (document the good folks, it makes a difference!) then slowly the grass will green up on your side of the fence. Kudos to a job well done of documenting your own experiences!

Just got done with my first day here in Phoenix for Knight Transp for their refresher course. I have a two yr DOT medical card with my doctor but they said I have to go thru their company doc. What does their company doc do that's different from what my doc did? Anybody got any info on that let me know. Thanks.

i think all of the knight physicals involve lifting, pulling and carrying of objects , not all doctors will have you do this, so i'm pretty sure that's why they want you to see their chosen dr.

how so? it's a team truck, i know in this 66mph pro star i can do 1000mi with three drops in two days. and that's with the truck not moving for 12-14hrs.

Well, they take you into a little room and then a guy with a huge moustache, wearing only a tie-dye tank top grabs your "junk" and tells you to cough. Careful though... if you have blond hair he might not let go for awhile...

I just got one in November and I had to get a new one switching jobs.
It was explained to me that they (companies) look at it the same way as a log book.
You are operating on their medical card.
The guy at concentra said there are people with pockets full of them.

I had one with the company I was with but had to get a MC from the school district that I now drive school bus with. Had to quit OTR, for now, wife's health got too bad for me to be out and about.
