Here are some. Remember that these laws were put in place to address wiretapping, covert video recording, and spying on people in the first place. They were NOT set to include the onset of vehicular video recording that has caught on.

The most significant legal wording in GENERAL terms is "covert." If a driver has a hidden cam in his or her truck and records audio or video of someone else in the truck then there is a higher likelihood that it is not legal depending on what state they are in.

The second significant legal concept is recording someone when that person has a "reasonable expectation of privacy." (i.e. in a home, a bathroom, etc.)

A dash or windshield cam in plain sight on the public roadways is a different animal altogether than the laws were written for. So far I can not find a single incident nationwide where usage of a dash cam has specific legal wording on the books. However, the Illinois law (see YouTube video link below) about recording a law enforcement stop is enough for me to make sure that the officer knew I had a dash cam if I were pulled over...

So again, most of the available info pertains more to recording people or law enforcement with a cell phone or with "nanny and covert" recording than to dash cams:

I'm considering putting decals on my vehicle:

Video recording in progress. Video evidence of traffic violations will be forwarded to local authorities.

Maybe people won't cut off the truck or go speeding past if they see those.

    Can't watch video.

I live around Springfield and know many policemen. I am fire and medic.

    This is new.

A camera in plain sight isn't covert.

I will have limited internet as I am headed to Canada.

I will check with isp as well and provide responses.

    Got the video to work.

    That was thrown out.

BINGO. That was the entire point of what I was saying. There is NO precedence set as yet for dash cam legality because it does not meet the same circumstances as the laws were written for. But I am putting stickers in the systems because I am going to CYA anyway.

I turned audio recording off on mine. Who would want to hear my singing in the background? That right there would be enough to blow any case I was involved in, despite the video...:biggrin_2559:

I have been thing of getting a dash cam, biggest thing holding me back is the liability issue. A company I worked for once installed tachographs in the trucks we were driving. The safety man ( at a drivers meeting) was going on and on about how great they would be, pointing out it could "prove you innocent", I raised my hand and asked, couldn't it prove you guilty? He didn't like my question for some reason....
But still, a few days ago a woman run a red light and a truck on our haul hit her. She claimed the driver ran it, another driver stopped and backed up our driver. If he had not stopped, guess how it would have went.
Another reason I want one, to put video's on Youtube showing just how stupid 4 wheelers can be! lol

Hey Gears could you post some video from your dashcam...I'm thinking bout getting one. It would be cool to have videos of some of the beautiful scenery out there and be a major plus to have a eyewitness with you at all times.
