Beveled lumber for coils

    This may seem like a stupid question but I have to ask since I cannot find anything on it. I have been flatbedding for 6 months or so. I learned at a Melton so who knows.

    What size beveled 4x4 is best for suicide coils from 10,000-30,000? 4 footers, 6 footers? At Melton I believe they were 4 foot in length. At my current company they have us use the crap board that we use for dunnage full 8 foot, most are landscape timbers that are rounded. Most are cracked and warped. So I decided to buy some good hardwood and make my own.

    Like I said may seem stupid, but I would like to hear what experienced guys use.

    I ran a coil wagon for a while, only had Oak 4x4 timbers 5 feet long.

    5 foot seems reasonable, I cannot remember but 4 foot seems that the coil will be wider in some circumstances, if that even matters.

    I would go 5 or 6 foot and it has to be beveled hardwood to meet feds requirements. I agree 4 foot might be a little short on some coild and 8 foot can get in the way of your chains

    The way i always looked at it was if i kept 8'ers on the trailer then i could also use them for other types of freight. Everybody has a different theory.

    I never tried 8 footers for coils myself, always carried 12 for regular loads.

    We currently use the 8 footers for coils, but as I said they are junk. They are not beveled just either a regular 4x4 and some landscape timbers.

    Whenever I get a load that they put dunnage on the trailer at the shipper and I deliver to a job site I usually trade the construction guys the new ones on the trailer for the crap ones in the storage rack.

    When i started the mills gave you beveled lumber and all they had were 8'ers. You went through the bunk of lumber and took what you wanted. Then you just kept it with you. The fuel shortage back in the 70's killed the free lumber when guys started being hogs with the wood so they could use it in their wood burning stoves. One of the laws on the ICC books was the shipper had to furnish the trucking co. with dunnage,but try and get the DOT to enforce that today. They're too hung up on other crap,just like detention time,oh we can't enforce that our big business buddies would be unhappy with us. Tricky Dick called us Thugs and look where we are today.

    I have been to a place and they refused to load me due to my dunnage being inappropriate. They offered to sell me some for 12 bucks a board. The company paid them but still that is crap and 12 bucks for a crap 4x4x8 is a little pricey.

    one way to go is to buy the coil racks that angle the 4x4. then you can use them as straight crosspieces and have the beveled wood when you need it , all from the same 4x4.
