Driving concrete truck for the Ready Mix plant here. Just finished my first week - it's going pretty great. They put me on my own my second full day there and just been getting used to everything.

Are there any other concrete drivers here?

Just the mixer. Got my class A CDL with tanker so they said they might alternate me between the mixer and the powder since some of the guys want vacation time this summer.

I asked this question before I became a trucker and no one knew the answer... So people who drive those sml construction trucks do have CDLs eh? I figured they did but no one ever mentioned it and it was never used in the trucking book examples as the types of trucks we drive.

Yep - we get reduced/no hours depending on how bad it gets. But the wages are high enough to make up the difference. Plus - you get unemployment because you aren't fired.

Yeah we do have CDL's. Only need a class B with airbrakes.

In Cali (where I'm forever glad I don't live) you need tanker as well.

I believe you need the tank endorsement to drive a mixer in PA as well.

My first driving job was a concrete mixer. That was 10 years ago. It was a old 2 stick Mack with no A/C, boy did it get hot.

It will be a forever job trying to keep your truck clean. There is always bits of concrete or dust that finds a home on your truck. And hosing it off will not always do it, sometime you have to get the acid out and wash the drum or get a hammer and scrapper for the tag axle or up around the hopper. Then there is the inside of the drum. You don't always have enough water left to do a good job of hosing off the fins. Then you will get buildup of concrete on the front sides of the fins. It would be a good idea every couple of weeks to go inside with a big hammer and pound on the fins to knock off that buildup. I know its kind of creepy squeezing thru the hole to get inside, but once you are inside it not to bad.

Don't let the contractors use up all your water washing their tools and boots. Determine how much you need to rinse out your drum and chutes and cut them off at that amount. Sometime they will get to jackin' around with you water hose and all of a sudden you are left with nothin'.

And why do they always want to pour out of the right side? When you have 3 chutes on you can never see very well out your mirror or out the back window. The best is pouring into a pump or conveyor belt or hauling flowable fill. (a sand and cement mixture that they pour real wet)

Make sure your drum is turning and its turning the right direction.:biggrin_25525:

    Good luck and have fun.
