An experienced driver recently wrote in another thread (I can't remember which one) that about five out of six truck driver trainees drop out or are disqualified at some point in the training process. I find that a little hard to swallow, considering it would mean that wannabe truck drivers face about the same odds as wannabe Navy SEALs. So what's the deal? Of course I can probably use Google to dig up some official stats, but I'm more interested in what sort of attrition rates you've personally observed.

Just someone pulling numbers out of their rear end. It's not that bad, but people do drop out often from seeing how life on the road really is or how much crap there is to put up with everyday.

I doubt that high during training, but I wouldn't be surprised if you're talking about not lasting a year.

18 people started orientation with me feb 8th. We lost one by the dr one by the pee test, On the 10th we were assigned trainers one never even got into the truck and went home. 3 weeks later when we returned to test out 4 more were missing. Everyone passed testing and we were assigned trucks one soloed for a week and said this wasnt for him. Another's mom had a stroke and she left to take care of her. That is as far as i know
If we bring in 20 bodies every week and only have 1300 trucks you tell me how many survive. I do know there are at least 5 of us left after 3 months

I would say that not many are disqualified unless it's a small company. The bigger companies just churn them out.

I have a co-driver right now who is nothing more than a steering wheel holder. He went through three trainers at Swift before quitting. Then he quit Werner before completing training. He was fired from Western Express after completing training because they found out he couldn't read a map. He then completed training with CRST and drove for them for a year. I have no idea why my company hired him.

If a trainee can halfway drive some carriers will use him or her for up to 6 weeks as a $300 a week team driver before rejecting them .
Why is it so hard to believe a high rejection rate when turnover is around 90% ? CDL mills turn out thousands of graduates a year and carriers aren't increasing their fleet size .
