I've lived in stephenville off and on for most of my life. The most you'll make within a fifty mile radius of there would be 15 to 16 per hour.
gdyupgal Thanks this. -

I am thinking that after spending some time saving money in ND texas is where it is at. At least the weather is better.
gdyupgal Thanks this. -
starsonwindow, gdyupgal, jvar4001 and 1 other person Thank this.

Thanks for the information on this thread.
I'll be fresh out of CDL school in about 8 weeks and still trying to decide between TX, and ND or surrounding states of either area. I have no concerns for the hard work, and long hours, as I've done that for almost 30 years now, and would like to get in about another 10 before I go on to a less demanding line of work.
Anyone care to offer some input on pros & cons to either?
I'm aware of most of the obvious things such as housing shortages, weather, etc... for either area, and also the lower $$$ of TX vs. no state income tax but would really like to hear from those of you with boots on the ground out there.
Also your take on the prospect of any slowdowns in the near future.
Thanks again for sharing your views.

Pros:
Weather-TX winter>ND winter
Housing situation, not as bad as ND
Infrastructure, not as bad as ND
Costs for everyday things, high, but not as expensive as ND
Work can be found pretty much everywhere
Cons:
Weather-ND summer>TX summer
Snakes, and other critters that can ruin yer day
Distance between towns-some areas there's literally nothing for miles, and small towns around me, close up early, and almost deserted on weekends. Be prepared to drive an hour or 2 for a place that you can stock up on supplies, like a Walmart, or JC Penneys, or do something during a day off
There's no signs of slowing down in the near future, but it is something that will happen eventually. Your best bet is to stock up on whatever skills ya can, or get on with a well servicing company, as the drilling stops, wells still need to be taken care of.900 mile walk and gdyupgal Thank this. -
thx for all the info,i am going to go to oklahoma next week to look for work,if i dont find any work there i will b going to texas.

Thanks Thirsty,
Could you elaborate on "stock up on whatever skills you can"?
I'd guess this will become more apparent once I'm out there but the more I know now the better informed I can be about making the right job decisions out there.
I totally understand the "snakes & other critters" thing. I've spent A LOT of time in the mountains and back woods around here and never realized that humans can actually fly unaided by any device until I had my first unseen buzz worm experience! The snakes I can see are fine, bring em on. The one's unseen will send your heart rate to areas you didn't think were possible.Attached Files:
