I am considering making a career change to trucking. I have been employed in the computer networking field since the early 90's but after a recent family loss and other factors I am just fed up with the $*#%!

    What I am looking for:
I have no problem with OTR and I don't need to get home anywhere, actually I would prefer OTR long distance runs. I would be willing to work with a team and with my next "wish" it might be best. I have a side business which I won't go into detail here but my ideal job would allow me to have 10 days off every 2 months or so.

    I have a few questions.
    1. I have the financial option of paying my own way through school but have no issue with making a commitment to a company. Overall which would be better? I would prefer the company paid option rather then touching my investments.

    2. I have been a long time lurker first time poster but maybe 6 months ago I recall reading about a company that had a program where you belonged to a 3 man team and worked 20 days on and 10 days off and ended up with two different team members during your 20 days on. Does anyone recall that company since that would fit my side business schedule?

    3. I live in Chicago and would prefer a company with a local terminal but how does it work when a terminal is far away? Do you drive there and park your vehicle there or take another form of transportation? I do not have a place to park a truck at home.

3a. Any suggestions on Chicago based companies?

    4. I have a passport and would have no issue making cross border runs, Canada/Mexico, does that make me more valuable or increase my pay?

    5. Besides taking the tests are there any other requirements for Hazmat loads? I read the thread about shaving...

    6. How many 12 volt connections are available in a typical truck?

    7. I read somewhere else that there are now 15 states with no idleing laws, are there any companies out there advertising APUs in all trucks to attract truckers?

    Thanks in advance.

1: go to company training (train with the company of choice)

    2: no clue. roehl has 7-10 = 2 off | 11-14 = 3 | 15-30 = 4 | 30+ = 7 | and 7/7 & 7/4-7/3

3: Roehl has a major terminal in Gary Indiana, 5 miles from chicago

4: dunno bout others but roehl pays an extra $20 or $30 for goin thru canada and a bit more for delivering to/from. canada sucks thou, been across it twice.. both times they threatend to shoot me. nice folks up there :biggrin_2556:

5: roehl doesnt require hazmat and hauls very little of it

6: to my knowlege my international has 5 total. the freightliner columbia has 4 to my knowlege

7: get screens for the windows, windy nights help alot. also idleair is a good deal. im a silver member with them :) $2.33 / hr for electric, tv, heat/air and @ roehl most of our rigs got bunk heaters that dont require idleing

by the way im a driver with roehl so i can only comment on what i know from my experiance there.. cant really comment on other companies

and has thier own CDL training, so you can train thru them. as for payment i think if you work for them the training is deducted or.. honestly i havnt any clue how that part works i went to a 3rd party school myself but im sure theres someway that would work.

Check Maverick. I don't know what company you're talking about with the swapping of team members.. but that would just straight suck.

Just curious with the "30+ = 7" schedule would dispatch (forgive me if they are the wrong person) allow you to take 10 days every other period off? Or could I do a "30+ = 4" & "30+ = 10" rotation? How flexible are companies with unpaid time off?

Just curious why it would suck versus a standard two man team? To me it seems it would be no different as long as the 3 people got along.

PS. If you don't follow what I was talking about it was described as so.
    Persons A & B work 10 days as a team. While C has 10 days off.
    Persons B & C work 10 days...A has 10 days off.
    Persons A & C work 10 days...B off.
    Rinse & Repeat

PPS. I tried searching for the original thread about the 3 man 20/10 schedule but the numbers are too short to be searched for.

Just to me teaming sucks. I don't like it but thats just me. Having to team with 2 different people... I couldn't imagine it. But you may like it. To each his own ya know? The off time sounds ok. But I couldn't run with someone else. I tried it with a good friend and it lasted about 2 weeks. We wanted to kill each other by the end of that 2 weeks and we don't speak as much as we did to this date.

The 20 on 10 off is a CRST program, and we have a drop yard in Chicago, you can park your truck at.

BTW, CRST's contract is 8 months, but I would recommend paying for schooling yourself to start at a higher rate of pay, and also to be able to pick your school. If you do go with contract through CRST, tell them you want to goto Kirkwood.
