I recently started with a new company and was both shocked and mildly alarmed to be told they DO NOT put jakes, engine brakes, or engine retarders in their trucks. I was told this was: "Because it puts too much strain on the engine." That's all well and fine, but I have a hard time feeling 100% comfortable when I'm hauling 45,000lbs...any one elses thoughts on this would be much appreciated!

It is possible to go down a steep grade without one, just have to be in the correct gear.
Personally, I prefer a Jake/engine brake. My current truck has a very very weak one. I prefer a Jake cuz i like the sound, plus it saves brake wear.

LOL! thanks for that! I realize I don't NEED one....I had just never heard of a company purposely getting rid of them!

I think you will have a well exercised sphincter lol

Feck, what's Goin on?

Me either, that's weird. Our company doesn't advise us use them any place other than a grade but I usually run mine all the time. Save brake wear

Use hydraulic retarders, no stress on the engine then!
