Anyone know how long it takes to replace the clutch on one of these trucks? Cuz I can tell you how long it takes to burn one up lol.
Was ground-guiding the T2 student on my truck into his first dock (far from his first back, just his first real dock). I planned to give him 10 minutes to get it in the hole before I took over as to not hold up other traffic at the receiver. He did it in 7. As I'm watching from the ground the truck's bucking and stuttering. I didn't think too much of it as I had my trainer's truck doing the same thing when I was first learning. As soon as he gets it lined up for the final back against the dock, I smell burnt clutch and see the smoke puffing out from under the driver's door.
Once unloaded, I get out and await him to pullout so I can close the doors. I hear the gears grinding and grinding and grinding. I crawl up on the steps and peek my head inside to see what's going on. He says he can't get it into gear. He moves over to the passenger side and sho nuff...clutch pedal has no pushback until 3/4 of the way down to the floor...clutch brake fails to slow the transmission down enough to engage 1st gear.
This truck's a '13 T700 with 52,000 miles. The clutch should just be getting broke in...not in need of replacement...even after being subjected to the "Steven's student torture test". So I'm perplexed. Nevertheless...we had another drop to do 140 miles away, due in 3 hours. So I do the clutchless boogie all the way to the 2nd drop...hoping and praying the whole way that the receiver has a roomy dock (pretty nerve-racking backing into a dock with no clutch). We get there and it's a WalMart-esque dock. Do that drop and head to the Petro.
Call RR and explain the situation. They tell me to take it KW instead of Petro for clutch issues. Nearest KW is 50 miles away...but just a few blocks away from final...due the following morning at 0800. So I head down to final and park in their lot for the night.
Deliver to final then head over to KW. Service advisor says he's never seen a clutch needing replacement in only 50,000 miles and assures me that can't be the problem...no matter how hard my student was on it. I give him the keys and we hop in the cab to the motel.
Get a call this morning from KW. "Did the clutch slip when pulling a load up a grade..or are you just having an issue getting it into / out of gear at low speeds?" I tell him it pulls fine under a load just won't go into gear without plenty of Caucasian persuasion. He laughs and says he'll call me back when he finds the problem.
Calls me back this afternoon and says they had to pull the transmission to visually inspect the clutch. I guess it's a long process as he said he won't have any answers until 0900 tomorrow. Yippee!
I call Pat to discuss breakdown pay (I've never been broken down in my 3 years at Stevens so I wasn't sure of the process). He tells me how the program works, but I probably won't be eligible because it's not a warranty issue. Double yippee! He says I'll need to get the training department to pay breakdown pay as well as the cost of repairs if I hope to recoup any money I've lost. I certainly hope that's not the case but I'll discuss it with him in more detail tomorrow once I know exactly what it's gonna take to fix the truck.
Meanwhile, I'm having a ball watching my student sweat his face off over this. I've got him convinced that he's gonna be stuck on my truck as long as it takes to pay me back for the cost of repairs. I told him it's gonna be at least $3000 to replace the clutch. At $350 a week, he's looking to be employed at Knew B. Wannabee Industries for approximately 9 more weeks. If the truck's not repaired by Friday he'll have to be on the slow dog back to Dallas (as he can't be off truck for more than 3 days). That will be the icing on the cake as I can really have him sweating it...I'll tell him Randall called and said he'd been fired for tearing up company property and he needs to be on the next bus back to the yard.
I'll let him stew on it until tomorrow.
So here I sit...in a motel in Harahan, LA (10 miles west of New Orleans). Hoping to get out of here tomorrow but guessing it won't be until Friday. Triple yippee! -
Big pain. Mine don't work. They don't kick me to the drive line or to on duty. Like they did not plug something in. And central will only give out one paper log.
