Drivers should all have clean white sheets on their trucks (was an old blue book law from years past but hasnt been enforced in years). Here are a couple of reasons why;
First white sheets will begin to turn yellow in the presense of carbon monoxide. This will alert you to an exhaust leak in the cab.
Secondly white sheets can be used for bandages and tourniquets in the event of a serious injury.
A battery operated Carbon Monoxide detector is advisable in addition to the white sheets.
Carry a backscratcher with you so you can scratch that itch without wiggling around in your seat so much and scaring the motorist beside you when you encroach on their lane.
Chock blocks to help you slide a trailer tandem that has brakes that wont lock up.
Feel free to add more if you guys can think of any.

Oh hell yeah, this also works to snag your box of snacks that is out of reach on the passenger side floor.Busasamurai, Shaggy, losttrucker and 5 others Thank this. -
Definitely carry the back scratch-er. Like brickman said it is also a useful tool.
I also carry a fly swatter. If you get a good stubborn fly in your truck, it will drive you insane.

I'm not a trucker yet, but I'm one of the two drivers of my band tour bus. We travel alot at night. Driving all night long, especially on boring stretches of Interstate, can be taxing to say the least. I find that in addition to my regular caffine boosters like coffee, Mountain Don't, and Choke-a-Cola, something crunchy helps me to stay awake and alert. Understand, you don't want to stuff yourself or over-snack. Just a bag of my favorite Chex-Mix beside me, allows me to grab one or two peices and nibble as I drive. It may not work for some, but I find the "crunch" helps keep me going. In addition, limit your heavy protein intake before you drive. Protein over-load will make you sleepy. Eat light, and eat some carbohydrates for energy. A good Vitamin pack in the evening will help also.
Last, for night vision and glare, get a good pair of yellow lense shooting classes. I like the Remingtons or Ray-Bans, usually available at gun shops and sporting good stores. They help to reduce the glare of on-comming headlights, headlights in the mirrors and roadside lighting. They also give the night a "brighter" appearance, helping me see better while driving.

For when a driver is getting tired but there is no legitimate place to park I have found ripping out a few nostril hairs will wake you up BIG TIME! Also works for whiskers on your face but you may be missing half your mustache or beard by the morning! Might look kinda funny when you stop in for your cup of coffee at your favorite rest stop.

Brings the freakin' tears to my eyes just thinkin' about it.

The technical reason chewing will help keep you awake is movment of the jaws stimulates the flow of blood to the brain thereby increasing the oxygen supplie.I had a science teacher tell me once that seeing a student yawning was actually a good thing for the reason listed above.

I have invented the perfect device for staying awake. Now don't go and steal this because there might be patents pending. You take a ballcap and attach 30lb fishing line to the back of the hat. Then on the other end you attach a fishing treble hook. You put on the hat then run the fishing line down your back and attach the hook to your nut sack. Then when you dip your head as you're starting to sleep the hook digs in and wakes you up. Be sure you don't have a partner asleep because the screaming will wake them.
