I graduated a trucking school 2-3 weeks ago with good grades and big goals for me and my new career. I'm 22 with a clean mvr BUT! and its one big BUT.....2 years ago I was living with my parents, my dad had some pot plants growing in the crawl space under the house, long story short cops came and arrested BOTH of us. Only reason I was arrested is simply, because I was home. Well it finally got settled in court 2 weeks ago and the felony on me was dropped and turned into a 90-96 on 2 misdemeanors which means I'm not convicted of anything, and as long as i go thru my probation(2 f$#king years) and pay all fines ALL charges will be dropped completely, i only qualified for this because previously I didnt have so much as a speeding ticket on my record. I AM on probation, but I'm allowed to leave the state for any amount of time as long as its for work.
Now I knew I'd have a hard time finding work, but after 3 months of applying at over 40 different companies and not even getting one nibble, it feels hopeless. I spent around $2,000 obtaining my CDLs(training, license, 3 endorsements) and it seems to be for nothing. I certainly do not want to wait 2 years before I can get a job, but thats how its looking. If anyone knows a company who can help or has any advice I'd be very appreciative.

Sorry you're having trouble. One thing I tell ppl in school is they should have got pre approved before even attending school. Many have loans they have to pay off but no trucking job. It's very unfortunate what happened 2 yrs ago but when it comes to the trucking industry,it's very unforgiving. All they see is what's on your background check and don't wanna hear your side.
Gizmo_Man and Newtrucker83 Thank this. -
I was pre-hired at 10-15 companies while in school, they said they could deal with a misdemeanor and just wanted to know when court was over. But its the probation none of them can deal with. I had one company say I was hired and they could work with it, now for the last two weeks they wont return my calls, and never answer when I call. Its not very professional of them but not much I can do about it. One of the recruiters who came to our school say they hired a convicted murderer before so I wouldn't be a problem, but then when I applied I was turned down anyways.

No I've talked to my probation officer and he said I can be gone as long as I need to as long as he knows where I am. So I don't have to be home any certain time to see him as long as he knows I wont make my appointment. So I have no restrictions other than I can't do drugs or move out of state, which truckers get drug tested more than any other profession I know of anyways.

My guess would be your issues are 1: Your age, and 2: your record. The misdemeanor DRUG convictions are still there until you complete probation. Sorry.

Actually, there isn't even a "conviction".
It's likely he did what is also known as an "alfred plea". You admitted guilt for a lesser charge as there is likely enough evidence to convict you. In return, the judge is "staying" adjudication for the charge so long as you complete your "requirements" in this case it's basically an unsupervised probation for two years. At which point, the charges are dropped as if they were dismissed.
In the "legal" computer records that the district attornies and LEO's see at the state level criminal background, your information is still there. However for any company that pulls a background on you, there should be no record of it having even happened that they can see.
Now your age and other things combined with the probation is another matter. Some companies are likely going to just shy away from it.
Now. Pick up craigslist, the phone book, local paper and start calling the smaller transportation companies in your area and just set up a time you can come in and talk to someone about driving their truck. Don't ask them if they are hiring. Ask them about talking to them about driving their truck for them.
Sell yourself. And don't dwell or talk about the bad things in the past. If it comes up, you were caught up in a situation, you addressed it legally, are accepting the consequences and moving on with it and learning from your mistakes.
Thank you and have a nice night....Last edited: Jun 2, 2012

I appreciate all the replies, as far as it showing up on my record USXpress said they could see where I was charged with a felony, then 2 years later the 2 misdemeanors show up. I've been spending all day every day since court trying to find a company, I don't try to dwell on the past but I usually ask qualifications for the job right away. Between age, record, and experience it's easy to strike out with most companies. My dad is actually considering investing in my own truck, which sounds great and all, but I don't really want to dive in head first like that, especially without a training to ride around with and have to deal with all taxes, DOT, highway laws and use taxes all on my own without having a company to lean on. I've even asked a few O/O I know to let me team with them for awhile to get experience till I can get on my own feet, but I haven't had any takers.
I've been on craigslist for a couple months now and other job sites, I should of thought of the phone book earlier but I'll give that a try on monday.

In Minnesota, we call that our "Alford Plea". In NC, you are actually admitting guilt.
one thing you can consider doing is asking your probation officer about doing something about getting your record cleaned up.
It's a nasty thing how some people READ a criminal record and can't understand a #### thing on it. -
keep digging - some of those companies do "lookup" on sites that in fact run credit histories then on others you may assume they had good search tools and saw the arrest record but factually the companies could be just skipping through piles of applications and mistook sifting the pile of applicants for better C.H. skills
most companies would be more interested in not stealing than evil weed
