Hello everyone I am new to the site and the Trunking community. A little about myself, I am 25 years old, married with 3 children (2 year old son and twin girls born march 1st.) I am also a US Army vet and served for 5 (long) years before decided to get out.
I live in northern new york. And my question is can anyone tell me about National Tractor Trailer School in Liverpool NY? I have checked out there website but would like to know of any experience first hand with this school. I'm a vet and going to use my GI Bill to pay for school so the price is not a concern. I don't care about getting my feeling hurt. I have pretty thick skin and a good attitude and love to work and learn. This school is the best choice because it is the only school I can find close to my area. Any info will help, Thanks

GT87 -- Did you try an advanced search (above toolbar) using National Tractor Trailer School. Seems to come up with some
postings! Good Luck -
I looked through alot of those thread's but most of them are years old and not any info I am looking for. I was hoping to find some one with some current first hand experience about the school. Thank you for the advise though

I went to the one here in Jacksonville, Florida 4 years ago and i loved it. The trainers were great they gave you one on one attention and extra help if you needed it. They care about you succeding. I'm not sure if the trainers will be the same way, but i'm just sharing my experience with the school. Good luck and thank you for you service.

I wish I could give you current information, but I went through there way back in late '95 and early '96. I can tell you that back then it was a good school and we had good instructors. And I think a couple of them might still be there. Wherever you decide to go, you seem to have the right attitude to make it work. If you decide on NTTS Liverpool, could you keep us posted through here? It really takes me back, especially since my current employer now has me training students on occasion. Good luck!!

Take this one with a grain of salt; single poster, almost sounds like a recruiter.... -
I'm going to NTTS right now. I've gone to college in the past and the teachers didn't give a ((insert expletive here)). NTTS on the other hand, the instructors DO care. With as many students as they send through there (my class started with 30, we're now down to 15)). Each instructor, if you ask for it, will take the time to go over the field maneuvers with you and don't just "robot" you through it. They explain how and where to put the truck to pull off the maneuver properly every time.
I'm in the 18 week program due to having to take out loans for school and that's the only program option you can get full funding for. I'm currently in week 11.
The first 3 weeks suck. I'm not going to lie. It was a battle to stay awake from 8am to 6pm for those 3 weeks, but they prep you at that time for your DMV permit test.
The next 3 weeks you learn the NYS DMV pre-trip inspections, drop and hooks, and straight line backing.
The next 3 weeks after that are blind side backing and see side backing.
Then it's 3 weeks of parallel parking for the DMV test, as well as offset and reverse offset backing. It is also at this time that they start your solo road rides. 1 on 1 with an instructor and you in the truck for 1 hour a day.
Then you get 3 weeks of serpentine backing. ( i know you'll never need this in the real world, but it's been known to be on the DMV road test so they teach it.)
Once you've done all this, they have you pick 3 other classmates and you get to go on "crew rides" for 6 hours a day for the final 3 weeks.
All while this is going on you get 2 hours of classroom "labs". Here you'll learn how to properly plan a trip, properly fill out a paper log book (the latest Hours of Service Laws), health and wellness for drivers, proper load securement, and they go over the coil endorsement that NY state requires if you haul metal coils. I'd wait until after this lab before going to the DMV to take the written test for that endorsement.
Are there shorter programs? Yes, however they don't get as in-depth as the 18 week one does, AND you might not qualify for enough funding if you take the shorter program.
If you do plan to attend this school and you're currently drawing "unenjoyment", get your 599 paperwork done NOW! They tell you that takes 4-6 weeks. HOWEVER, I was one of the first to get approved in my class, and that was 10 weeks into school. I'd filed 2 weeks before classes started. What the 599 does is it waves your need to do go to the unemjoyment office for the job search interviews. Also you'll find that 1-3 times a week they bring companies in for "recruitment". Fill in your work search forms with these companies, you are able to informally "interview" after they give their dog and pony show on why you should work for "company X".
I hope this helps, and if you visit the campus any time soon, just look for the fat guy with the long go-tee, and the sun bleached western star hat. Ask your Admissions Adviser to flag me down, I'll be in field 2 most likely.

Thanks for all the the info guys. And thank you very much for the break down of the course FCW9. After looking into the school and reading what you guys have to say I think this is the school for me. And I think I will do the 18 week course. Right now I am collecting unemployment but im using the GI Bill from the army to pay for the course. Is the staff (admission/finacial) good at the school? As far as helping with that sort of stuff? I think im going to do a tour of the school at the start of july but I wont start until the fall. How often do the 18 courses start, and do the classes fill up fast? Thanks again guys for the info, this is the kind of info ive been looking for.
And Rick C your very welcome for the service. I would like to drive locally or at least stay in the region. I have alot of respect for OTR truckers but its not for me right now. Got a wife and 3 little one's
