I recently graduated from a CDL school, but I haven't been able to get a job so far. I have a really crappy work history (I quit 2 jobs after only 1 day because I didn't know how much endurance they requried). Is this something that could keep me from getting a job in trucking even with the bottom feeder mega carriers? for what it's worth, to my knowledge I think that's the only red flag on my job applications. I don't have any felonies, nor have I had any accidents or had my license suspended or failed drug tests or anything like that. I've definitely messed up and made mistakes in some of my past jobs, but is there anything I can do about that to help me get hired now?
There's also another thing I wanted to ask. On two of the applications I filled out (I think they were for USA truck and Werner), I lied about my work history (I omitted the two jobs I quit). my question is could that actually prevent me from getting jobs at other companies I haven't applied to yet? it sort of seems like it. Also I failed a phone interview with schnieder, (because of my bad work history). I dont know if that could be hurting me as well. Anyway those are all the questions I wanted to ask for now. I would appreciate any responses.
Also I feel like this post makes me look like a terrible potential employee. All I can say is I don't think that I am. I know it looks bad that I talked about lying on applications. The only explanation I can offer is that I did it because telling the truth didn't seem to be working. I started out being honest but it didn't seem to get me anywhere (I believe it hurt me in that schneider telephone interview). So I thought ommitting that bad work history on those 2 applications would help me. I know it's wrong and I'm not offering that as an excuse, I just wanted to explain what my thought process at the time was. so yeah, that's my sad story/cautionary tale. I guess I just wanted to know if I can do something to still get hired somewhere. I've already done a lot of research into the trucking profession and even with it's many many downsides, I feel like it's something I would enjoy doing.

I am kind of in the same boat as you Slim... working as a nurse manager in 2003 I started using the Demerol we were using for surgical procedures. Needless to say I was arrested, have a felony and ruined the only career I'd ever considered since I was a child. There are companies that will hire me with a felony and even with the drug history but it's all in the way you package it and spin it when you address the issue in an interview. If you learned a lesson and have changed the way you live your life as a result, then hit that point hard. Try to find something POSITIVE about whatever your situation was at that time and DON'T dwell on the negative aspect or put a past employer down for any reason, even if they employed you for 1 day only. Don't ever lie to any prospective employer, EVER! It may seem harmless at the time and you may have even justified doing so in your mind but 99% of the time your lie will be discovered and you'll end up far worse off. As a prospective employer, there is no way I'd hire anyone who I found to have been dishonest to get a job... if they were dishonest about getting the job in the first place then what else will they be dishonest about once they've been hired?
Good luck,

unless they pull your ss history (only law enforcement and the govt does this) they wont know what you dont put. central only verfies your past 3 yrs
i should trucking takes a lot of endurance, sitting for 10, 11 hrs is brutal physically and mentally -
Law enforcement and government are not the only one who will pull your SS history... there are companies in the private sector which will, as well. My current employer did it through a third party company.

I have had 1 job for 9 months in the past 3 years.. I have also been a volunteer fire fighter for the past 4 years w/ the same dept. When I filled out my app, they checked my job for 9 mnths and the fire dept. My work history before the 3 years was kinda rocky but I did manage to get hired on by USA and will be starting class monday. As a former manager in the food service industry, I know that verifying employment seems to be an issue with alot of people now adays with the economy, but just be upfront with them, my recruiter was cool..she had no issues helping me get verified and hired on...(potentially provided I pass the course). Good luck, alot of companies are taking prior work history with a grain of salt because they understand that times are tough right now...

it depends on why you left the other company's.there are good reasons for leaving a job.and that is what they look for.they should ask you about your other jobs and why you left.though just starting in trucking seems odd.scense all other jobs are not trucking related. verifiy unemployment like reciving unemployment pay.other then that i have no clue never heard anyone ask to prove you where unemployed..lol

There are plenty of companies out there that will hire you. Lots of truckers are job hoppers too! You may not get a job with the top 5 mega-carriers but this maybe a good thing! Here is a website that may help you.
