watch out for hub-o-meters that could be off by 10% or more! -

I still think that the most fair method of compensation is a fixed percentage of line haul.

rdtaylor74,
Your classmate is 100% wrong. Most OTR companies pay practical miles or worse, household goods miles. Either way, you will lose money as most of the time your actual miles will be more.
Unless you enjoy working for free, I suggest you find a company that pays you for all of your on duty time. Either hub miles with hourly for all other time or hourly to begin with. Good luck with that. Those companies are out there so take the time to find one.
Now if not being paid for all of your time sits well with you and you like to work for free, the sky's the limit. This site is loaded with companies that will fit your needs. -
I'm thinking with the economy the way it has been, some companies are going to start paying air miles.

Percentage probably is the best however with that being said, its usually paid to the experienced drivers. For some reason its tough finding a gig that pays percentage as a newbie. Maybe because its usually the smaller mom and pop companies or owner operators.
I worked for a company that paid hub miles and we could choose our own route as long as we could make the provided fuel stops. If the route was 50 miles more we got paid those extra miles. If we got lost, we got paid those miles. As long as it wasn't extremely absurd or something like parking your truck on blocks and putting the cruise control on all night while at home!Ops85 Thanks this. -
I know CRE pays Rand McNally miles which shorts you about 50-100 miles per trip. One time I broke down and my gps said I was 322 miles from the receiver. When I called my DM he looked up my location and said I was 322 miles from my drop so they have the software available to calculate or miles exactly.
