Hi everyone im still new to the forum. I was reading some of the older post here and while I was reading I saw some people saying they where having problems with getting a job because of gaps in employment. I joined the army when I was 19 and served 5 years (January 2007-January 2012) with honorable discharge. But me and my wife found out we where having twin girls but they would have to be in the hospital for the first year of there life. We are from upstate new york but we are staying at a ronald mcdonald house while our girls are at the childrens hospital of philadelphia so I am not working right now because we are at the hospital everyday. However I plan on going to truck driving school as soon as we get home and get on with a normal life. But my question is, will this year or so of unemployment hurt me when I start applying for jobs. Even though I have a good work history? Only other jobs Ive had where between the time I graduated from high school and the time I joined the army but that was mostly time I was just waiting to go to basic training. Any info or advise would be helpful

I don't think the "being unemployed" part is what hurts you. It is just being able to account for the time even if it simply means you were unemployed. In other words, If you worked from 1/08 until 1/12 at Company A, lost your job and didn't find a job at company B until 5/12 You need to account for all the time so you would list it like this:

    5/12 - Present Company B
    1/12 - 5/12 Unemployed
    1/08 - 1/12 Company A

They just want you to account for all time involved, even if you just list "unemployed" as your employer

I would get a letter from the doctor stating you were there while you daughters were under their care. Just in case they ask for proof.

I have also been wondering about this I was with my last company for 6 years in Illinois, they closed down my office 1/1/12 due to lack of work. The only reason we were in Illinois was for my job so in Jan me and the wife moved down here to FL Cause we have family down here. I knew I wanted to get in to trucking but needed to get $$$ together to pay for Schooling. I applied for many jobs to try and hold me over but had no success so I had to put a little aside each week from my unemployment. I finally got enough money to get started in May and if all goes well will have my CDL in 3 weeks from now. I really hope I don't run into any issues it's the first time since high school I've had a gap in employment :biggrin_25513:

Maybe I'm being a wet blanket but, are you sure you should be getting into trucking with such a young - and seemingly fragile - family?
That is laying quite a lot on your wife, while you are OTR for a year or two.
And for at least a year or three you won't be making the kind of money you'll need to support both them and you.

Thank you for your concern moose. But I'm not going to jump right into an OTR trucking job ASAP. I just want to go to school and get my CDL as soon as I get home while I'm still unemployed and my wife has a job waiting when we get home. I'm still not dead set on being a trucker but I'd like to have something other than military to put on my resume and college is kind of out of the question. However trucking or equipment operator is on the top of my list for career. Again thanks for your concern

You don't need to be concerned about job history to attend CDL school and actually get a CDL. The job history comes into play when you apply at truck companies. You will need to account for your time and that should be no problem in your situation.

i would document all the time out of work, for whatever your reasons are.

then i would have the document notarized by either an attorney, or even the banker you go to.

(i get many of my documents notarized at my bank, and for free as well).

good luck to you, and i do hope your kids are fine now.

Motor carriers are required to document at least the last 3 years work history. If you have been in school, working or unemployed, that time must be accounted for by the carrier. You will need a 10 year work history, but at least the last three years will be checked. I would keep notes of your time off until you find work. I would suggest that you wait to start CDL school until you are ready to go to work. If you wait too long to go to work after school it will be more difficult to find a driving job. You could be required to take a refresher course if too much time elapses. Good luck with your children. I hope things work out for them and your family. It is very difficult when you have family members who are ill.

Notarizing a document means absolutely nothing except that the person witnessed you sign it. It does not make the document any more "legal" or "valid".
