Dang! I'm going cross eyed looking at this computer screen so much but it's called research. I've been looking at companies in my area that might be a good fit for me when I complete CDL school. I've found many that require 2 yrs OTR but several that take on students.

Here is a list of those that take students...

    Epes
    Cargo Transport
    Old Dominion
    Boyd Brothers
    H O Wolding
    ConWay
    TMC Transportation
    Maverick Transportation
    Cooke Trucking
    WLA

I'm sure there are more and I was trying to stay away from the big monster companies.

I'm in NC and looking at regional OTR. Any suggestions or recommendations are welcome and appreciated!!!

I'd shoot for Epes if I were you. I've never really heard any bad about them, and that is saying something in this industry. LOL. Also, I'm pretty sure your in a really good area for them, seeing as you live in North Carolina.

As you can see by my list Epes is at the top of the list. I've read everything I can find on here and haven't found anything negative either. I've also met with one of their drivers, who I met on here, at their main office and terminal in Greensboro. We sat in his truck for over and hour while I picked his brain.

The others aren't in any specific order.

    Thanks for the input!!

If you like working in extreme heat and freezing cold and sitting for 3 hours before you see a dime of detention. If you like having an electronic log track you and limit you from making any miles or even getting home....then Maverick Transportation is for you. Oh, and you will love the "Black Hat" Company snitches that call in every move you make. The pay sounds good til you realize how much time you waste and burn up for free. I was with them many years as a company driver and tolerated alot until the electronic leash was installed...income dropped, I left.

You did good! Way to put forth some effort instead of following the herd!

Just remember that your career is YOUR career and don't make any decisions based upon anyone else's suggestions or experiences. If you think a certain company is going to be a good fit for you then go for it. Only go for the one you feel absolutely positive about and interests you the most. You are going to get what you put into it and if you can go into this being positive and have a good outlook you should do just fine.

I think by you finding some of these smaller companies your chances of success will be that much greater.

    Good luck man...

    Chompi,

Thank you very much. I'm probably spending a good 7+ hours a day reading and researching. There is a lot of valuable information on here if you know how to make your way through the weeds.

You are exactly right and that is exactly what I'm going to do! I'm going to take all that I'm learning, from as many sources as I can. I know that it is possible to work regional and get home most weekends with some companies and some of them hire students as well. At the moment Epes is at the top of my list and I'm trying to find comparable companies to them. Run regional (east of the river) and weekends home, quality run company where people are proud to work...OH YEA...and they pay out the wazoo!! LOL... As you can tell, I'm like every other wannabe and I want it ALL. But, I am a realist and I know that might not be completely attainable. I do think, based on what I've learned, that Epes comes real close to those goals. So for now they are at the top of the hill until someone knocks them off.

In my time reading on these threads I have found you often giving advise. It has always been positive and constructive. I want to thank you again for that!! It has helped me and I'm sure many others more than I can say.
