Nothing out of the ordinary. Whiz quiz, physical, paperwork and skills test out at the yard before you're assigned your trainer. It's important to do well on skills test, I heard of one guy getting sent home because he struggled with it. Don't worry, as long as you listen to what Butch and Fran tell ya, you'll be fine. You get plenty of practice time out in the yard as well.

What do I have to do for my skills test? I am not at all worried about a road test but my backing skills need some work.
During my skills test I did ok on the parallel but not to great on the offset left. I have a bad case of test anxiety.
After I was done and new I passed instructor let me do the backing again and backed it in like a pro knowing that I did'nt have to worry about failing.

Skills test is a road course out behind the yard that includes a couple of rights, an off set, parallels from both sides, a straight line back, a tight back in as if you were backing in between two trucks at a truck stop ( they use 2 trailers), and then at the end you will bump a dock. They will teach you tricks and help you the entire time and you will have ample time to practice. Just remember to get out and look when backing. Just try and become more comfortable with what the trailer is going to do and when.

I noticed that too. I'm in Fayetteville NC (off I-95) and am pondering what working for H.O.W. would be like in my neck of the woods. Does regional mean home every week? I'm at a great place now but thinking of moving on to something new. The website says up to .48 cpm, is this a floating pay of some sort? If so then what is the base rate and how are cents added? I see you listing MT miles, is that paid at a different rate?

Also, who do you recommend I talk to if I decide to call and inquire more? Thanks!

HOW is pretty flexible with home time and as far as the SE regional works, I'm not too sure as I am never in that area. That's something you would definitely call recruiting about (800.950.0054) they were very helpful with any question I had. If it's like the NE regional I know a lot of guys just take a 34 on the weekend but are putting down as many miles as the OTR guys. All depends on what you want to do and who you have for a dispatcher and how well you two communicate about what each other wants. They have extended regional which is regional but if you wanted to run a longer one out of your region they would work with you on that, but that's definitely another question for recruiting as I am not entirely sure. Pay is up to .40 cpm but with all of the performance incentives and accessory pay you could certainly average that. I know I get paid .30 cpm base but my gross pay divided by miles comes out to .38 cpm. All miles are paid the same so you're right, don't know why I put them there. I hope this was of some help, hope you had a great 4th.

Heading out this morning with a load of water going to the Sam's Club in Rochester, NY for 2100 tonight. Haven't had a water load in a while, the bills on this one say it weighs out at 47,100...yippee. After that I will be taking a relayed load of paper to Saratoga Springs, NY. This mini vacation was great, my batteries are recharged and I am ready to go. I'll post last week's paid miles later on.

Spending the night at the rest area in Howe, IN. Deliver tomorrow morning in Stevens Point, WI and then head over to the yard to pick up my load going to Bellemont, AZ. Picked up my current load in Florence, VT and before that I delivered a load of water to to the Sam's Club in Rochester, NY and then picked up a relayed load from Wisconsin that delivered in Saratoga Springs, NY before picking up in Vermont. Last week's paid miles went like this.

    6/29-7/2: 1644 miles
    7/2-7/2: 198 miles
    7/2-7/4: 1360 miles

That comes out to 3202 paid miles for the week plus .03 cpm on the short haul load. Oh and BTW beautiful up in Vermont and the roads are tons of fun to drive on. Stay safe out there.

Snuck through Chicago on 90 early this morning and delivered at Neenah Paper in Stevens Point, WI. Took my MT over to the yard and hooked up to my loaded trailer going to Arizona. My dispatcher asked if I wanted to upgrade my truck and I told him I would only do it if it has an APU or can idle in California, not that I don't anyway, but I risk a ticket in doing so. Other than that I wouldn't want a different truck, if it ain't broke don't fix it. I'll spend the night here at the yard, get my safety meeting out of the way in the morning, and then head out.

Got my safety meeting for the quarter out of the way today. Spending the night at the Iowa Welcome Center on I-35 in Lamoni, IA. Along the way, I saw an overturned Southern Refrigerated truck a few miles outside of Newton, IA. It didn't look good so I hope everyone involved is ok. Other than that, a rather uneventful day. Thinking about taking US56 through Kansas and Oklahoma over to I-25 down to Albuquerque for a change of scenery. Anyone know/take this route at all?
