Read the daily inspection report on any log book page and note the part about the mechanics sign-off statement and maintenance action ... until you get a signature from a mechanic on this, you won't have much of a leg to stand on. If this is a chronic issue where you work, i'd seriously consider going somewhere else to work after rationally discussing these matters with a terminal supervisor. -
I should also add if you want to keep that notebook fine but you still need to make the same notes on your DVIR. If you have a marker light out and get stopped haveing it noted may get you out of a ticket. But if you write up something like an air leak or brake chamber thats dangling there expect a ticket and to be put OOS. You can also expect a one on one with the boss explaining why road service had to be sent out. I'll bet it comes back on .... ready for this? ...... YOU THE DRIVER

A wise man once told me, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say may be used against you in a court of law.

As a D.O.T. officer told my husband when he asked... it's HIS responsibility to drive a safe truck. Sure writing everything down can be of some help in certian things.
It is HIS ( or your) choice of driveing it or calling road service. Company says drive it or loose your job... s'up to you, which is more important, your life ( if the issue is that bad) the points you may or may not have your DMV report , the ticket you might get or your job.
My husband has quit 2 different jobs over safety issues on their trucks, that they refused to fix, but still wanted him to drive.
