    Question: Has anybody ever actually gotten a ticked for idling? If so, how were you caught? Some cop stare at your truck while watching his watch, or something?

    Also, Walmarts supposedly don't want you idling? Anybody have any stories of being in trouble with them about this?

    I ask because I'm in a Maryland Walmart parking lot and it's going to be 95 with high humidity today. I can't see how this non-idling law is reasonable in this situation, yet the state law doesn't seem to allow any exceptions.

    Thanks.

    At this temp I will idle my truck ticket or not. I would be happy to take it before the judge. As far as Wally-World not likeing it I would not care at 95 degrees my truck is going to be idling. I have never been given a hard time about idling in hot or cold temps.

    Park out of the way till its your time to unload or load. Turnoff your lights.

    WalMart has the no idling policy for several years since they were fined by the EPA for emissions from trucks idling on their lots .
    However in MD it's a state law . http://www.mde.state.md.us/assets/document/Idling%20Technology%20Fact%20Sheet.pdf .
    You have options including APU's , Idleair or shore power , and clean idle certified trucks . Your choice if you work for a carrier not providing these options

    I would also say WalMart is private property and can dictate your actions while sitting on their property. Don't like their policy feel free to go find a Motel or better carrier.

    My choice of what? No, Schneider has not provided me with any of the options. Yeah, I know it's state law not to idle here.

    "When it is necessary to accomplish the intended use of the vehicle" is listed as an exception. No chance I can say "my truck is intended to be used for sleep, and sleep cannot be accomplished in such conditions", huh? ;)

    A motor vehicle engine may not be allowed to operate more than 5 consecutive minutes when the vehicle is
    not in motion, except as follows:
    o When a vehicle is forced to remain motionless because of traffic conditions or mechanical difficulties
    over which the operator has no control;
    o When it is necessary to operate heating and cooling or auxiliary equipment installed on the vehicle;
    o To bring the vehicle to the manufacturer’s recommended operating temperature; or
    o When it is necessary to accomplish the intended use of the vehicle.

    I would say that in these temperatures it is necessary to operate cooling and it is necessary to accomplish the intended use of the vehicle.

    People go to work where they can. In the beginning the options are not there.

    I would not suffer or be uncomfortable. I would idle and let them come out and tell me not to. They're not going to call the cops out to "bust" you. If you're at a DC they do have a drivers "lounge" area inside. Take your laptop up there and chill on their dime.

    If your in California the C.A.R.B cops drive thru the truck stops and if a truck is not certified clean air idle tbey will write a ticket but the temp has to be between 38 and 82 I think to get one. Anything above 80 they know u cant jeopardize a humans life due to regs. Same as getting below freezing. Call the local cops or dot and ask them the regs they are your best source for answers. Be safe

    as drivers, we can't win. Clean air rules our Country. Nasty ol' diesel engines, noisy, smelly, un-healthful, right ? I often wonder if only a few trucks had idled over the years instead of way too many needlessly idling would have at least postponed these clean air rules now going into effect. So, we deal with it. You can get out of the truck and sit in Mc D. for 3 hours in their A/C dining room, sipping slurps, or get a motel room. Or only run the west coast lanes. Or quit trucking and head home and work in a factory. Oh, there are "idling Police" in Ca. that watch and ticket violators.
