So technically a trainer who sits in the passenger seat for up to 11 hours while the trainee is driving is doing so illegally.

what counts most is the 70 hour rule if each driver drives 10 hrs a day at the end of day 7 they will both b out of hrs. the last driver to take 10hrs in the sleeper will have those hrs avilable the next day. you only need to do a restart to get a full 70. for instance,i drove for butler trans as a solo for 3 months str8t before i got out of the truck and came home. never did a restart just maqnage the hours. i would never log onduty not driven because it hurts your 70
Trucker_Matt Thanks this. -

For the newb's, if you don't show any line 4 and get a log book inspection it will cost you some $$$. For sure they got you on the pretrip because either you failed to do your pretrip(ticket) or you falsified your logs saying you didn't pretrip when you did(big ticket).
You can cut down on the time waisted on line 4 by being smart about how you log. Keep pretrip and fuel to 15 minutes only. If fueling takes longer then 15 minutes just put down some line 1 to make up the difference, DOT doesn't know if you spent that extra 15 minutes in the restroom or not. Flag your arrivals at shippers and recievers then go to line 2 till your ready to leave, show 15 minutes on duty then. Post trip can just be flagged. This is how I always logged and never had a problem with it.
If congress doesn't change it's mind, you won't have to worry about logging properly on paper anyway soon enough. We'll all have computers doing it for us. -
Conway will not be happy with you when they see inspection reports for falsified logs. -
