get the nighthawk brand detector.
my grandmother had one of those $15-$20 ones next to her furnace....2 days ago the hvac repairman informed her that the carbon monoxide levels around the furnace were 3x what they should be. he took the detector off the wall, which had a brand new battery in it, and held it next to the highest emission point and the thing didnt even flinch. he reccomended the nighthawk brand detector.
ask yourself one question my freind. is your life worth saving $20? because if it is by all means buy the cheap one. i heard dying in your sleep is peaceful anyway![]()

GOOD THREAD! This info just might save some lives. I've never even given it any consideration! Duh. . .
91B20H8 Thanks this. -
This is one of my pet issues, guys. Like I said, I suspect I got a nasty dose of CO back a few years ago. I also heard of a rash of guys dying in their sleepers once over a short period...maybe around 2000-2002 range. I BELIEVE they either worked for the same outfit and/or drove the same kind of truck. If they worked for the same company, obviously a mechanic didn't know what he was doing with EGR valves.
No matter what the thing costs, get it. Get two while you're at it. And always keep it/them at room temperature. Don't let a CO detector get too hot or too cold. -
Just a curious thought.
Since carbon monoxide is such a risk and is a health hazard, WHY don't the companies think of the drivers health and install them in the first place. They would not add much to the cost of the truck.Gearjammin' Penguin and Canned Spam Thank this. -
I wouldn't quite call it a "hazard". I'd just say it's better to be safe than sorry....or worse. It's like wearing seatbelts. 99.9% of the time, you won't need them. It's that .1% you worry about, so you buckle 'em.
Truck manufacturers should be required by law to install CO detectors in trucks, absolutely. -
