So what options does a new student have if he sees early on in his training that he has one of these so called "instructors"? I want to get a quality instructor that will allow me to do the work BUT that will be there to guide me and answer all my questions at the same time, not draw exta pay from my efforts. If you call and complain about one of these will you be looked at as a troublemaker and then eventually gotten rid of or what? These types of instructors are, I'm sure, part of the reason for some of the high turnover because when the student goes solo then he has no clue what to do and stresses out to the point of quitting. If Maverick knows they have bad instructors what do they intend to do to resolve the matter. I'm sure they know who these guys are by now?

Ive run into some instructors that Id call lazy but in my 9tyrs with Mav Ive never seen or heard about any instructors like what was described. If I heard a student make the comment "i just put up with it" then Id probably laugh at him. I however hear very few complaints from students rather most have a lot of good to say about their trainers and often keep in touch with them after getting their own truck.

Well at a pretty decent week. Started off on Monday going from Gary Indiana to Georgetown Kentucky. Had to stop at the shop in Gary to get my seat fixed and a new sensor for one of the drive tires. They had me in and out of their in two hours sweet . Then went up to lipstick and picked up a load going to Detroit then Detroit to Cleveland then back to lipstick. Then went to Toledo back up to Detroit to load going to Berwick steel in Ohio. Then back up to lipstick and picked up for Chicago delivered that Friday afternoon reloaded out to Gary going to Jeffersonville Indiana for Monday.
2100 miles for the week. Made home Friday with 16 min. left on my clock.
Have a great weekend, drive safe and enjoy the ride.Flatbedder 1966, jxu417 and JimTheHut Thank this. -
I would have to say maverick has some of the best trainers. But every now and again a in adequate one might slip in if the students don't tell maverick about it maverick doesn't know about it. If there is the issue call and talk to training. When you fill out the evaluation forms on your instructor be truthful.
Some drivers can be good at what they do but they suck at being an instructor. If maverick values anyone thing it is honesty.JimTheHut, airforcetoo, Flatbedder 1966 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Sarge you are so right. With you being a instructor I see why you take it so personal since the actions of one instructor reflect on all of you. Since you became aware of the situation I know it will be take care of.
I wish maverick had a lot more instructors like yourself.Flatbedder 1966, jxu417 and JimTheHut Thank this. -

I had another good week. Mid-OH to Tennesee, then to Rockport, IN reload back to Mid-OH area over and over three times. 6 loads delivered this week.
I did run into a couple of our Glass Division drivers in Middletown, OH on Wednesday evening. When I was heading to the notorious DOOR 185A I saw one of them preparing to back in, and I had some fun with him as I called him on the cb and asked him if he was here to pick up one of those "GLASS COILS". He thought that was funny.
He had not done alot of coils before so I was more than eager to help him out should he need any. Now, I am not what anyone would call an expert yet, but I was asked to lend a hand especially in the tarp job. We did him up with a beautiful tarp job and he was proud to roll with it. And, since I gave him a hand with it, he was happy to take the super10 flat tire that I had been hauling around on the back of my trailer the past three weeks to the Madison terminal for me (since I hardly ever get close to any of our terminals-who knows how long I would have had to haul that thing around on my trailer!)
What a nice guy! I was very happy to get it off my trailer...
To any new Mavericks or anyone reading this thread leaning towards going with Maverick, it is such a reassurrance to know that Maverick drivers are always willing to lend a hand when we are out there.Flatbedder 1966, Go Hawks and sewerman Thank this. -

On the topic of Sarge's post early-trainers... I thought that I would put this on here to demonstrate exactly what we at Maverick do have compared to some other companies in the way of training.
One of the drivers in my division and I were talking while waiting to get loaded at Rockport the other day and he had just spoken with a driver from another company that will remain nameless- but I know that we have all seen them around alot (and No they do not have black trucks)...
This driver had experience as a van driver, and had just went to drive flats for this company recently. He had some trouble with the fact that since he was "experienced" he was just given the keys to a truck and sent out there- NO FLATBED SECUREMENT training. He had not been home in over a month. Terrible equipment. Yadda yadda yadda....
The other Maverick and I both expressed that we were so glad that our experience in this industry started with Maverick (and how had we began flatbedding with this type of experience) that we did not feel that we would have made it if we had not. I can say that if I had no securement training whatsoever, and then had to try to secure one of these big mean ugly 48K pound coils that we load with crap equipment, I would be less than enthusiatic about my career choice. Instead, quite the opposite. I (we) roll down the road with these monsters nearly everyday, properly secured the Maverick way and under a nice, clean, squared-away tarp job that I (we) was trained to do well. Happy that I can say all of that- because believe me, there are plenty out there that cannot, and IMO, some that should probably not be out there on the road.sewerman, Evil_E, Flatbedder 1966 and 1 other person Thank this.
