Is this placard illegal?

I would question the safety department as to why the driver picking up the load was not given the correct placard. This is a requirement. If the safety dept does not want to send over the QC, I would hesitate on taking the load. HazMat on the road could get costly. I hope you have the required hazMat book and endorsements on your CDL.


You are right about the gross.

172.504(c) contains an exception from the placarding requirement for shipments that contain less 454 kg (1,001 pounds) of Table 2 materials. A frequent problem encountered involves the 1,001 lbs. exception. The 1,001 lbs. is aggregate gross weight. Aggregate gross weight is the total weight of all hazardous materials and its packaging loaded on a single transport vehicle. For example, if a vehicle has 1,500 lbs. of Class 3 materials and 50 lbs. of Class 8 materials, you would have to placard for both Class 3 and Class 8.There are additional requirements for placarding such as:

You can take a cardboard placard and flip it over and write the UN number on the back side of it.

 

No need to alter the placard. The Corrosive 8 you have is sufficient. Th UN number is only required on the shipping papers which should be in hands reach and readily available in case of an accident or inspection. Like the door pocket.

Emergency response only cares about the general class. All corrosive 8's will be treated alike. They are trained to find the shipping papers if need be.

Like Century said you don't block or alter a placard.

It's scary you have a safety director that doesn't know. You should have the hazmat reg book in your possesion.

As cruiser says, it really is sad that their safety person has no more knowledge than the driver that doctored the placard.

 

That placard is just gonna draw the attention that you don't want.
1) No altering allowed The "C" and the "E" might be confusing to emergency response--that just looks hokey
2) Has to be able to withstand weathering conditions--this looks like paper and tape
3) Must be a definitive line between the top and bottom in the middle of the placard--this line seems to be
covered by the paper they added.
4) Correct me but I think the lettering has to be 1.6 inches

This one is not legal. The reg is 172.332 (c) (1).
BTW, the use of CLEAR plastic packaging tape is legal, you cannot use colored tape. It is as durable as most placards, more durable than some.

 

You must have the physical guide in hand. It is required. Your safety department or at any truck stop.

If you run Hazmat you must also be endorsed? Are you endorsed? If you are not then you cannot hook up to this load and be on any public road.

 

Your first post you said bulk which just requires the UN only on the packaging. Non-bulk requires the UN on the packaging and on the vehicle. Non-bulk is less than 119 gallon containers. Then you use multiple placards. In your case then you would have the corrosive 8 and a separate UN placard on the trailer.

Who ever got the load should of asked the shipper for a UN placard. They usually carry them. Companies that haul hazmat normally will have permanent multiple flip placards on the vehicle. Many truck stops sell them where you just write in the UN.
