I'm using rubber tarp straps, but have never feelt like the 4x4's were secure enough. I've also used the throw away elcheapo 1" ratchet straps, but those are a hassle, and 2" just seems to big.
My rack is just 1x1" square tubing welded under the trailer frame with stops welded on the ends.
Stopping short of switching to an actual basket. Whats a better way?

Bungees or tarp straps are illegal to secure dunnage and will get you a ticket. I use the 1" ratchet straps, but I buy good ones.

Short piece of 1/4" chain and a snap binder always worked well for me...

I just use a bright orange (since dottie loves to look for this) one inch strap and ratchet I got at walmart. Has a 350 pound rating on the tag. -
the state of kansas is pretty particular about that. i used to work for a company, that like many, carry the 4x4's on the landing gear supports. if they are only secured with bungies in kansas the fine, at least then, was 75 bucks. may be more now, and i am sure kansas isn't the only state that makes an issue of it.
dirtyrabbit Thanks this. -
I was looking at poultry binders, but I'd have to order a set just to find out if they would work. Or maybe even the little spring load binders with a short piece of chain.
Im also considered using some of the E track ratchets w/ a doubler to tie the two ends together.
Ill probably just order some decent quality 1" endless ratchet straps. -
check out a company called snap loc. I bought a couple hundred of their kits for our flatbed trucks. Might fit your application http://www.snaploc.com/

I use a 2" wratchet strap from TSC. It was on sale for $9.99 and works just fine

I use the heavier duty 1 inch ratchets from Walmart, that I buy in four packs. They do have a WLL, so they are acceptable to the DOT. They work good for tarping too!
You definately do not want to use bungees to be primary securement anything, but tarps. That will not only get you a citation, but also some CSA points.SHC Thanks this. -
A little expensive until you look at there truck and trailer pack
