I will not be starting school until springtime of next year, but I have been studying the CDL manual for about a month now. I just finished taking the general knowledge practice test and one of the questions was "What is stab breaking?" According to this test, the correct answer is "Should never be used". My answer, which was wrong btw, was brake until wheels lock up, then release brakes and repeat etc. Please tell me I'm not losing my mind here...I really want to be as prepared as possible when I start school! Has anyone else noticed this question on the test?

I have a poor opinion of the written materials,....I wrote the State Office { Texas } and do not have a reply - for about 10-% of the questions including "stab-braking" I know what actually happens in fact but could not figure out what wording was wanted, the term is obvious, so should be the answer
whoever wrote these questions either does not drive or should not driveBronzeLion Thanks this. -
Could it have been something other than the general knowledge test? I'm looking through the question database now and I don't see any question that asks, "What is stab breaking?" I'm going to check air brakes and combo vehicles as well.

Ok, the question in our database is this
Stab braking:
a) Should never be used.
b) Involves locking the wheels.
c) Involves steady pressure on the brake pedal.
d) Should only be used on slick roads
the question has been corrected to recognize the correct answer as "b) Involves locking the wheels"
There will probably be some discussion about whether stab braking should still be taught alongside controlled braking, but state CDL manuals universally recognize stab braking as an emergency stopping technique.BronzeLion Thanks this. -

The Texas CDL tests have more than one error. It askes the minuimum tread depth for the drive tires. My answer was of course 2/32... according to the test the correct answer is 4/32 which we all know of course is the correct answer for the steer tires. When I pointed this out to the local DPS personnel I was onformed that the drive tires ARE the steer tires because those are the ones the driver controls so they sre driving the vehicle. The scary part is these are the same ones ho did the road tests...

My current state manual is out in the truck, but if you flip it over on the back it says it's prepared by the "Association of Motor vehicle Administrators", or close to that. So are all the other manuals for all the other states I have seen. They use the same format, wording, page arrangement, and their tests use the same questions. Some of those questions are not well worded and the occasional question is just wrong. Additionally, they devote too much space in the manual to things like wig wags and front brake limiters that perhaps are of historic importance but don't need to be on a test for folks entering the world of modern transportation. They know they have errors and outdated material, but it's the government, they can't just fix it. To the OP: you'll do fine on your exams.

they still have wig wags on school buses don't they
