I drive a '12 Prostar daycab with an end dump occasionally, and it's got the Maxxforce 13. Definitely an exhaust brake (must be a choice when ordering the truck) and set at 430hp I've had to add an HOUR to a 4 hour trip due to the hills. Previous truck for this was a '09 Century with a Series 60 Detroit, also set at 430. VAST difference in power and jake.

The Navistar engine isn't all bad... mine can't pull a empty trailer over a hill without putting up a fight, but anymore than 30k in the box it passes other trucks.

There are basically two models of each Maxxforce 11 an 13 engines. The 2007 and the 2010. The 2007 model Maxxforce 11&13 do not have "engine" brakes, but only an "exhaust" brake. The exhaust brake is very very weak and kinda a joke. The 2010 Maxxforce does indeed have a genuine Jacobs Brake Engine compression brake. The engine brakes are standard equipment on Prostars only and optional on Workstars and Transtars. The 2010 model still has the exhaust brake valve after the turbo. This valve is primarily used to create back pressure and extra load and exhaust heat to aid in a parked regen. I can't find anywhere to say that it is still used to aid in engine braking though. The normal service interval for a valve lash setting is 250,000 miles, but if you are feeling weak brakes anything out of adjustment this early would mean a defect and should be checked out. It should be checked to that the engine is seeing the request from the body controller to command 100% brake level. Even though the switch is at stage 3, it may be only registering stage 2 or 1. These engine brake work the best at the upper rpm band. The engine will command high turbo boost to aid in the braking, you should be seeing at least 20 psi of boost at stage 3 braking at 2000 rpm or so. Also the engine will detect open or shorts in the brake solenoid circuits and log a code, this should be checked also.

Update, Jake brake is working a lot better after my first PM was done. They did adjust the valves. they said my 1st and 5th cylinder were out out of adjustment by a slight amount
