What was the nature of your disability? A flatbed company might not be a good match, if you were physically disabled.
Wondering who'll hire me....

Make the calls to the training companies and find out if it is going to be a problem. You can also look into companies that only require class B to drive. The requirements might not be the same.

The top question I have is will your doctor give you release that you can work physical demanding job with no restrictions? That will keep you from getting hired by any flatbed company, and 80 - 90% of the rest. With the strict requirements of most company insurance, they want no restrictions. Some are now not hiring overweight people because of sleep apnea fears. .CC/Comcar is one example. Possible sleep apnea or big neck, overweight and they deny you. Recruiters are asking that information now when they contact potential drivers.

from SSDI to truck driving seems like a pretty big change.
I will admit , I am most curious... -
In order to answer some of the medical questions, I'll give a little more background on my medical condition. My particular ailment is an autoimmune disease called "Systemic Sclerosis(Scleroderma)". It affects people in many different ways. In my particular case, I am constantly sore all over. Every muscle I have is always sore to some degree. With strenuous activity it becomes even more sore. My lungs have been slightly affected, as in I don't have quite the capacity that I once had. Currently I'm on high blood pressure medication to control the high blood pressure. The gastric problems that I experience can be greatly minimized as long as I eat once a day, and then, only on my time. I have lost the very tip of a couple of my fingers due to raynaud's syndrome, which also accompanies this disease, although I haven't had a serious attack in several years.
Basically, as long as I can stand the pain associated with my activities, then I should be cleared by the doctors to go back to work. I don't believe activity will harm me in and of itself. I feel that if I can keep the strenuous activity limited to shorter spurts in between much longer periods of driving, that I should be able to manage. There was a period several years ago in which I was not able to weigh over 120 lbs(that was a scary time!) but as far as appearances go, I think I currently look healthier than most of the truckers I see, at the truck stops. I'm 5'11" and weigh 155 lbs. While this disease can always take a turn for the worse, I do feel that, as of right now, trucking is something that I could do(or at least deal with). -
Are you sure trucking is the best option?

At 45 I would expect a little more from the brain pan. -
Flatbedding IS going to involve some strenuous activity, with tarping, chaining, strapping, etc. You might be 2-3 hours in the hot sun, strapping and tarping a load. I don't know your pain threshold, but a van job sounds like a better fit, at least to me. Whatever you decide, good luck!
fred garvin Thanks this. -
