i will admit i know i need a sleep study i am a safe driver i know my driving limit and i will pull over if i get too bad i know i have apnea never could afford a study until now and plan on doing one however i dont see i should have to spend that kinda money every year to show i still have it that's dumb and is like throwing money down the toilet my neck size is small and so is my body mass except for a little beer belly i am 5'7" and 185 lbs i am not a red flag for a sleep study but i will do it on my own cause i would like to not feel so tired yet i have no trouble staying up long hours however the system i use when driving is i dont waste time on my hours if i can save my 11 hours to drive most of that i save the extra 3 hours to take a short nap in between my driving and it works wonders you know its funny if they brought back the split sleeper and made that mandatory on drivers that had or are flagged for apnea it would make drivers a lot safer out there at least the ones that really had apnea but i will not take a #### test every year

Well my sleep study appointment isn't until October 11th. I am on the cancellation list so if someone else cancels I get in sooner. And my wife benefits start on Sept 1 so there will be no co-pay as she works at the hospital that is doing the study. I was supposed to start the academy on Sept 10 so I guess that probably won't happen. At least it should be cooler in Phoenix in October than September. And maybe being with a mentor in Nov-Dec will be ok if it's an early winter. I threw chains once for Donner Pass and don't remember enjoying it too much. But I had a DM whose favorite line was, "you're getting paid to drive driver, not worry about weather and road conditions... you WILL NOT park when you have hours to run". I ofter wonder if he is still with Swift? Probably a Vice President now so I better watch my comments LOL

And yet, I see truckers going to the counter with two big handfulls of candy and junk food and power drinks - all the time.

Just because they have 2 for 1 candy doesn't mean we have to buy it like a 7 year old, but so many do.

If you have sleep apnea get it treated. I have sleep apnea and use a Cpap machine. I feel fine. My symptoms were not falling asleep just out of the blue. Mine was snoring very loud and getting up many times during the night to go to the bathroom. I might have felt a little sluggish during the day but not enough to stop my productivity.
Sleep apnea is a life threatening condition. With treatment you are fine. If a company doesn't want to hire you because you have sleep apnea you don't want to work there anyway.
Erratic sleep pattern (driving all hours at the day or night) is more dangerous than sleep apnea. Trucking companies want to turn their heads on that because they know that is the real problem with drivers falling asleep at the wheel.

That's why I try to only drive during daylight hours.
Plus, I can't see well enough at night. Especially in a Volvo with those headlights that point at the ground.

Can't always manage it, but I can usually keep daytime hours at least 90% of the time.

I keep getting stuck with appointments between 1 and 3 am so I am stuck driving at night more often than I'd like.

A friend of mine had to do a sleep study a couple of months ago. The company he works for set it up with this place where he was able to do it at home. They mailed him the equiptment with instuctions on how to use it. Once he was done he just mailed it back and five days later his doctor had the results. The test cost $200 without insurance. If he had insurance the cost was $250.
