    The OP did not say if he was married. For future readers who are considering entering the trucking trade, one important question you need to ask yourself is (assuming you think you're in and want to be in a committed, monogamous relationship) ... "How much do I trust my spouse while I'm 800 miles from home, weeks at a time, and will my spouse at home be able to trust me?" If you're satisfied with that answer, then you can proceed to the next researching steps.

    How many years have you been on that job? What level of seniority do you have there? What is the likelihood of a promotion to a supervisory role in the coming years as your body becomes less able to handle the physical nature of the job? What sort of pension/retirement package would you be giving up if you left?

    I'd think it over long & hard before you change careers.

    Believe me, this is not a decision I am taking lightly. I could lose a lot by making a bad choice here. This is something that I am researching right now and don't plan on taking any action until next year. My plan is this: In January I get 3 weeks of paid vacation. I will use this time to go train and get my Class A. If I don't pass, no big deal...I still have a job :) If I do pass then I will have a new job :)

    My wait for a supervision job is about 10 yrs out. I have been at this job for 7 yrs now so the retirement benefit is not huge right now.

    Hometime is important to me but so is the quality of life for my family. If I run hard and get miles my income increases. At my current job, my income only increases when I get OT and I can't really rely or count on that.

    I realize that the amount of miles can depend on availability of freight, my DM, and etc. I would do a great job with 100% professionalism regardless of the company I work for because at the end of the day, I have to face myself. Everybody has to start somewhere and not everyone has the same advantages as others. I have strained and struggled my whole life and I know that getting into trucking will NOT change that but having struggled and having put up with BS that is out my control for so long will play a great part in handling some of the BS that goes with trucking.

    I am a loner by nature and I am very introverted. The long times of being alone wouldn't bother me in the least and in a lot of ways it would be welcomed.

    Thinking about getting into trucking is not a new idea for me. I started thinking about it when I was 23 but my kids were still small and life kinda got in the way.

    The idea of being able to set your own pace to an extent also appeals to me because I like to "hit it and git it".

    If you go with a large carrier you will not make good money for several years if at all. Does your wife work? Could you take her with you? Are your kids grown and out of the house? Is your house paid off? Just some things to consider. Also you said you'd like to see the country, most of the time all you'll see is white lines goin past your windshield. It usually never works out that you'll get laid out waiting on a load somewhere good. Most of the time if your laid out its somewhere in the middle of nowhere, and when you do pass somewhere you'd like to check out your under a load and don't have the time to stop. Not to mention you're driving a 70 foot long truck so you can't just park anywhere.

    here's my advise. stay where you are at. you think your job is S#%@, pal you aint seen nothing yet. sounds like you got a nice union job with good bennies. you wont find that trucking. you will be lucky to clear 30 grand your first year. out for 5-6 weeks at a time then home for 5 days. most of your home time is spent asleep. rude shippers, receivers, dispatchers, drivers, etc. all day every day. thankless job with no respect.

    I'm not union and if I was I sure wouldn't think about getting out of it lol. I currently make less than $500/wk...without OT. You are right about trucking being a thankless job. Truckers sacrifice a lot to get product to where it needs to be. Let me tell you this: Utility work is also a thankless job. Try having to turn off someone's water off to repair a main line and they have to take a shower and head to work......they don't come up and give you a hug I'll tell you that! I've been called motherf##ker so many times that I'm starting to think it's my name.

    Getting up in the middle of a winter night to go fix a water main break and get soaked to the bone isn't real fun either but it's just part of the job and it's what I chose to do.

    I have noticed throughout this forum that a lot of truckers seem to hate their jobs. It's a wonder that anyone drives a truck at all.

    Just go for it!! I understand where your coming from I'm kinda in the same catagory I guess, spent the last twenty plus years in a huge plant working on machinery all day , and am still there now, and watching it dry up and go overseas, as they cut half the people and cut the hours and cut the retirement and all the othe perks that were there through the years. and now working forty hrs. week and not making squat... ready for a change myself getting ready to get permit, physical, and make a decision on who I should shoot for..right now it is , Millis, and Roehl..49 yrs. old and need to work for another fifteen years..so beleive I will give it all I got..I growed up around trucking , I have rode with my dad summers around the South in a Brockway Cabover which would fly..anybody remember Byrd Motor Lines? .It is a lifestyle change for sure but ya gotta be happy , knowing ya tried..
